I'm trying to go ahead with a manual conversion with my 1999 KH verada ... the legit way.

But its bloody frustrating when mitsubishi know **** all about their own cars.

Firstly, the KH verada and the TH magna are the same car mechanically (same engine, same tranny, etc.) Only problem is veradas never came out in manual. So converting it shouldn't be a problem..............no it has to be hard.

So, I called vicroads regarding the subject. They told me if I get this done I'd need to get an engineering cert due to the fact that my model doesn't come with the manual transmission factory. That IMO is bull****.
Then "amturbo" the person selling the tranny gave vicroads a call regarding the issue, he then called me back saying the they told him that if I could get a letter from mitsubishi stating that both magna and verada are the same car internally and a manual conversion is not a problem, i can do this without an engineers cert and just show vicroads officer when making the transfer on paper.

Then, I called up MMAL. Someone there told me that they can't help me and that i need to speak to a service department from one of the dealers to get the what i need on paper.

So I then called 2 differnet dealers and they both told me that they didn't know excatly and that I have to call up MMAL again and tell them that they would be the only ones to give me such information.

SO, I called up MMAL again and I told them that the dealership/service department told me that you (MMAL) are ones who are suppoed to give me such information, then they replied "no one here is mechanically minded to say that a magna and verada are the same car only that the verada came out in auto and it is "technically" possible to convert it".

BULL ****!

Do these people know whats going, are they just lazy or am I just an idiot???

Why does everything have to be so difficult!

its just one of things...cars arent really made with the intention to be modified and it would be way to much hassle for mitsubishi to give YOU a letter like that...also even if they did give you a letter saying magnas are veradas it wouldnt be passed through vicroads even if they did say it

JUST GET A MOD PLATE, thats the easy answer, muzza_oz's verada is manual and got mod plated etc, and he has had no problems with it either,

so your trying to have the 2nd manual 3rd gen verada in australia hey ???

Pay a couple of hundred dollars, and get an engineer's certificate. You are wasting your time getting Mitsubishi to tell you what you want to hear, they have no desire to open themselves up to any legal liability with regards a modified vehicle. Same with the dealers.
It's a stupid system. A mate dropped a 396 into his Chev Impala, cars in the US came factory with them and drum brakes.
The NSW RTA decided that even though the US vehicles had them, his car needed a disc brake conversion(HQ discs). This in spite of the fact that the two different cars (US and Aus import) where built on THE SAME PRODUCTION LINE!
So, disc brake conversion went in, braked worse than stock 12" drums. Got engineer's cert, got rego then sold off disc brake conversion.
You are not dealing with reasonable individuals with common sense, you are dealing with a beauracracy. If you don't do it their way, it don't get done.

Regards, Andrew.

AFAIK - mod plate / engineers cert. = same thing

I do know for sure that mod plates in Qld are a lot cheaper than in NSW and the same probably goes for Vic. We pay about $100 for a mod plate, in NSW the same thing costs about $300 if I'm not mistaken.

Yep, Alot people don't have this anymore....
But the difference with my situation is both cars are manufactered and released here in AUS!! (I think)

Looks like I'm not going to go ahead with it, too much stuffing around. :doubt:

Them not giving you the wording in writing doesnt mean theyre useless pricks.. It means that they have a brain and know that their writing on paper could cause all sorts of legal implications should an issue arise. Also, if they dont know exactly, I dont blame them for not writing it down.. I know I wouldnt put my scribble on anything I wasn't sure of..

Have you rung anthony yet? He's been in the mits workshop for 15 plus years, he would know and should be able to help you out.

Exactly, especially when they haven't seen the finished product. If you were an engineer, would you sign something off as safe without even seeing the final product?

The main reason that they make people get engineers certificates is so that people don't do dodgy jobs and then have them break in a possibly unsafe way. I'm not saying that you will do a dodgy job, it's just that some people may.

Also, by having an engineers cert, you will be able to get insurance easily.

Exactly.

They sold you a car that was also manufacturered 7 years ago, the warranty period has well and truly expired - they don't owe you a god damn thing.

Go to your own expense of engineering, etc and stop wasting the time of a struggling company.
