I had this in my TR (2.6 auto) and it turned out the transmission oil level was pretty low. Try topping that up or even checking to see if the oil needs replacing.

to m4ddog and magnabuff thanks for your help, oils ok,cv joints ok,ie no noise when steering hard lock l or r ,reverse or fward..its like when youre slowing up for the lights and you take your foot off the throttle and just touch the brakes coast down to abt 5 kph and then clunk ..take off and throttle hard, sweet shifts, tromp at speed and down shifts good.checked the wiring abt 50 bluddy times as with the throttle position sensor cos i had to wire it into the auto ecu.dunno!!!!

the thud is probably when your car goes into 1st, so im guessing it's something related to transmission/connected to.

If your idle speed is too high it can cause this.

id also check ur ball joints, front control arm bushes and also make sure ur bump stops and or the front suspenion isnt worn. my tp was making a creaking and thump sound then i replaced all the front suspenion bushes, tie rod ends and balls joints and the sound went away. just another idea have u been under neath to recheck that all the nuts and bolts are tight, it might be somthing simple like the brake calipar bolt is a little losse. cant hurt to check anyway.
oh yea if ur engine mounts have even the slightest tiny crack even if its only a few mm's long will mean it need to be replaced sometime they look fine but its when u grab a tourch and have a real close look u see the craks starting, where as ull probably be looking for a tear but by that point it way to far done.
p.s welcome to AMC hope u get the info u need and if u want a faster respone about ur first gen(tn magna) we have a section for the first gens. any questions u need answered just do a search in the first gen section first cos u might find what ur looking for. good luck
