View Full Version : throttle position sensor
On my new hyundai,my TPS needed to be replaced. When part come from sydney,it will be fixed:pray: Have anyone here have any problems with their cars with efi, with the TPS?
What i don't understand why the engine warning light did not come on(stay on when running)

i have a feeling the tps in the 2nd hand throttle body i have is stuffed. TPS doesnt come up for an error code on the ecu, nor does oxy sensor. Only the dizzy(ignition and cam angle sensor inbuilt), crank angle sensor & air flow sensor can show error codes with the ecu. Guess its just how they generally build cars. TPS isnt considered a critical component regarding possible engine failure. Oxy sensor appears to not be either as when this fails the engine automatically runs the car very rich.
what problem was the tps giving you?

The car is running un-steady around 55-80 km/h every 5 kms.

the tps is connected to the butterfly of the throttle body
the engine will either run rich or lean
there is a spring on the butterfly
it is my guess when the tps fails the butterfly will just run on the springs resistance
Hi M
From your description you might be thinking that the TPS somehow controls the movement of the butterfly, but in fact it is just there to tell the ECU what position the butterfly is at
There is around 5 volts on the TPS, and if there is eg. a 2.5V signal sent back to the ECU, it then knows that the butterfly is half open
If a TPS fails, you could expect very poor running and a tendency to stall, etc

If your Hyundai has coil packs on top of the engine, sometimes one can break down because of the heat - causing a missfire
Cheers, Barry
