View Full Version : excessive fuel consumtion after service?????

Had my 04 TLVRX AWD serviced, (15000km). In the week after the service the car has had a significant increase in fuel consumption. Gone from averaging low to mid 11/100km to using well over 15/100km's WTF. Driving style has not changed.

The dealer did use a fuel system cleaner which I am sure would not have caused such an increase. Have complained to the dealer and they said nothing was touched/changed. Only carried out what was included in the 15000km service.

Just put $30 worth of fuel in tonight and reset the trippy and still no joy. The car also feels rather lazy compared to what it was. Its seems that the trans is confused, as shift points are all over the place. Going to pull the main fuse tomorrow and reset the ecu to see if this helps.

Anyone else had such an increase in fuel consumption after a service???

Mine wasn't after a service, but after i added a injector cleaner into the full tank of petrol. And yes, that full tank of petrol went unusually quick. I couldn't believe it. But oh well.

I am guessing that the ECU was reset, it will be trying to work out the optimal Air/Fuel ratio I guess.

Could be the type of engine oil they used to service your car. Some oils use less fuel than others. I always bring my own engine oil when its time for them to change it. Happened before where I felt the engine didn't rev as freely as it did before after a service. As someone said before, ecu may have been reset and its still trying to learn your driving style amongst other things. Give it a week or two and see how it goes...

Just remembered fuel consumption did go up for me too after a service. It should go back to normal after a few days. Mitsubishi dealers do clean the injectors after 15,000km

I got them to use Mobil 1. What oil do you use???

I would guess that they've dis-connected the battery during the service and that's caused you ECU to be reset. Give it a few hundred kms and it should settle agian.

I have just done a full weeks driving which equalled 460km, to the tank with the fuel cleaner in. Put some more petrol in yesterday and it is still using quite a bit of fuel. I'll give it another week which will mean 1000km's since the service and hopefully it will be better.

maybe the mechanic gave it a hiding and has confused the ecu. It might not be used to a royal hiding???

we always get around 15 in town, and the best ever was 9.6 the whole tank on the highway.
(TW AWD) -theres someone at work who complained to me how thirsty his TJ AWD was as it was doing 12 around town!!
Mebbe I should sit with you for a few days and learn how to NOT accelerate:redface:

im guessing its been givin a hit or too and the computer has altered to suit with the change in conditions

Mebbe I should sit with you for a few days and learn how to NOT accelerate:redface: Highly intelligent response :gtfo: I don't need to drive like a hero/idiot all the time mate. I am not complaining about the added fuel consumption penalty that AWD have over the standard magna. If I was I would have bought a different car!!!!

As it is used as a daily driver and the fact that it sees mainly 70%highway/30% city driving off peak I see lower figures that most. I take it that some people have seen a temporary increase in fuel consumption after a service and it settles down after a few 100km's.

Reset the ecu and went for a drive through the hills and it has settled down. So it seems that one of the techs must have given it a flogging as they used well over 1/2 tank of fuel apparently checking a coolant link.

Thanks to those that offered intelligent helpfull responses.

I've pulled the negative terminal off the battery a couple of times to reset the ECU. On each occassion I've found that the economy improved and the shift points were better suited to how I like to drive (shifts higher up the rev range, not just off idle like it learns to do when driving in stop-start traffic).

Is that all you do? in a Third Gen? ???

mmmm.. me might try that. Just had timing belt change etc... at 90k.. and fuel seems up a bit.

Thanks Craig. :)

I think youve got it covered but just incase, if its shifting all over the place and idling stupid check the TPS plug mine was left off (********s).

As for the ECU learning for a week, lol where have you people got your facts it learns the air/fuel mixutre in a metter or minutes not over 100's of K's

We're talking about driving styles, not air/fuel ratios. Well i was anyway  .

Its ok leigh i know your smart :P
Someone was going on about air/fuel but i can't be bothered going back through it :)
Speaking of driving styles since i DC the battery last week to install the stereo and ive been driving harder its been a lot better to drive

Yeh i'm thinking i might do the same. 95% of the time i drive sensibly and that 5% when i want to overtake it slowly accelerates in a high gear, so now i just use tippy :). But if i dc it's just going to go back to what it was .

Well thats what Tippy is for, total control over the gears don't be afraid to smash it back to 2nd @110 on the FWY :) i do it all the time i beat my mates WRX haha it was running stock boost tho otherwise he owns me :P

Im keeping it forever or atleast that what i think now.... oh and whats wrong with going back to 2nd even in D when u flatten it at 100k's it drops to 2nd.... you bloody grandma's!

To answer the question about resetting the ECU (and other systems), I disconnect the negative terminal, and then, to ensure there is no residual charge being held in the system, I turn the ignition key to the start position for about 10 seconds. From practical experience, this resets the transmission shift patterns. I can only believe from what I have read that it also resets the ECU.

My transmission (TL AWD tippy) was shifting abruptly at lower speeds (take off and slow moving traffic). I mentioned this to my dealer and they loaded new firmware during its last service. Much smoother changes now.
