He probably damaged it somehow.

Cant remember ever doing a crank angle sensor on a 3rd gen. I may be wrong though maybe it is a common thing.

yeah ive seen where they didnt route the cable from the sensor right after a timing belt and its cut the cable.

as much as i hate making assumptions and possibly making a good man sound bad, i'd say he has stuffed the crank angle sensor in doing the timing belt job. In all my time, i've only seen them being replaced when damaged by accidents or dodgey workmanship. Just ask him whats actually wrong with it? and to show you, if he can. If it was stuffed before the timing belt job, im sure the car wouldn't start!

yer if yur CAS was stuffed u would definatlly know about it, yur car would missfire and carryon then stall and not start again.

Crank angle sensor dieing is not a common problem.

Without the crank angle sensor the car will not start.

But he told me that it was a common problem woth TF 3.0Ls and he said tht they just pack up once you change the timing belt, so everyone time i change the timing belt i would most likely have to chatne the CAS...ah well i might have to fond a new MEch

Cheers guiys

i had 'a' dealer (not my regular one, a sister shop to my regular mitsu shop) tell me my CAS was possably the cause for my previous ecu/starting issues, so if ur CAS was bung, you would have known about it prior to the work on your timing gear with all sorts of regular running sillyness, as Meh says.

I spoke to a mitsu tech, and hes says aslong as the timing gear is done right, you wont need to replace the CAS, unless it is otherwise damaged or faulty.

I did ask him about CAS in other models, and said it a common issue with certain *makes* of cars, but mangas are pretty good with thier CAS's. perhaps hes ofcourse bias, but imho he knows what hes on about.

fyi, my CAS was not the issue, turned out to be the imobiliser meowing.

personally, i take my TJ to the mitsu dealer, expensive, but atleast they should know what thier on about. I have a good mate who runs his own mech shop who i trust without question with my previous other cars, but just for the knowledge base, to the mitsu dealer with my magna.

if it failed you would of towed your car to his workshop.

but whats worse is, you can't really pin him for it.

best you can do is ask for old part, and never go back

definately ripping you off. I've done 3-4 timing belts on magna's to date and never had an issue with the crank angle sensor. If your crank angle sensor wasn't working you wouldn't have been able to get your car to the mechanic in the first place. This is why generally mechanics suck.

So what happened? Did you sort it out?

Crank Angle Sensor check - grab an old plug, pull #1 lead and attach it, crank engine, no spark mean CAS unserviceable. Sometimes they can overheat due to grime/oil build-up etc...Magna's unfortunately you can't pour water on them like Commodore's to cool them down due to where there mounted/access. I think your new mechanic is having a lend of you to the expense of $250.00

If i were you i'd give him a nice friendly call stating you know you have been ripped and that it was probably his fault the CAS stuffed up and that you wont hesitate telling everyone you know NOT to go to his particular workshop. If you're not confident with that sort of thing maybe get someone you know who likes picking fights to do it? lol.
