View Full Version : Fuel consumption question

Hi guys,
I own a TJ magna that's done about 75,000 km. I regularly service it, and thus far have had no problems with it.
My average fuel consumption is usually between 9.4 - 9.6L/100km, and has been that way since I bought it a couple of years ago. Recently (in the last month), my consumption has gone up to 10.3 - 10.6 all of a sudden, and my driving patterns haven't changed at all. My brother suggested that the local servo (caltex) could have started using ethanol in their fuel mix because he's been noticing his fuel consumptions dropped as well, so that could be a possibility but I'm not so sure. I was thinking that maybe my injectors need a clean, or something.
Some advice would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers

Ethanol mix will give you lower fuel economy but the upside is that it tends to clean your injectors.
Does yur regular service include air and fuel filters? How old are the plugs and leads?
These are the usual suspects when the economy drops off a bit.:D

10.3-10.6 is still very good economy! even if driving habits havent changed, it wouldnt take much to jump from 9.6-10.3 (just chuck the trip computer to "instant" and see how little foot movement it takes)

haverent noticed any differents in power or iderling a little rougth ? as if it where the injectors i think u would notices these symtyoms firstley.
all in all id be happy if i were getting readings like 9.6 10.something.
and wouldent servos have to tell the consumer if they where blending there fule?

i'm getting about 10L/100km combined cycle, could be that the mechanic disconnected the battery during the service? This can make driving/economy somewhat irregular until the computer settles again.

well i got 11.5L/100km today when i filled up my car, but thats because i hammered my car a fair few times and went out on a cruise Friday night as well as 90% of my driving for the week was in city/suburban roads, so u are doing well with less than 11L/100km, remember mine is a 3.0 V6 auto

my ts fuel economy is not very good, ok, one full tank = 380km on the united plus stuff, u know the 5% ethanol, ive been told that these things can be getting over 500km sorry to take off topic but it seemed the right thread while its in the frame of mind

Ethanol is not as efficient as regular unleaded. Though your getting an octane boost, your fuel consumption drops. I'd say that 380ks off a tank of ethanol is quite good, though I'd never use ethanol fuel in my car.

u may do 380km till your fuel ligth comes on but still u will have 25 literes in the tank give or take

hmmm yeah my fuel economy has jumped from 10.5 to 12 and im not sure why. Just had its major service so all plugs are new, not sure about leads...
But my girlfriends brother has a TL and his economy jumped from 9 to between 12-14. He eventually tracked it down to the oxygen sensor. As soon as they changed that it droped back down to 9-9.5 again. So Im gonna see how much they are and change mine.

I'm not sure to tell you the truth in regards to the air and fuel filters. As for the leads, I'm pretty sure they're still the originals so I'd say about 5 yrs old

Yeh oxygen sensor is a big culprit in all generations of magnas.

Yeh oxygen sensor is a big culprit in all generations of magnas.
Wouldn't the engine light come on if the O2 sensor was playing up. Replacing them for maintenance sake is costly. An OEM NTK sensor for a TJ magna is about $150.
