Just went to get a price for a timing belt & plugs etc (200,000km service) at my dad's mates workshop and he said its not worth bothering to do. He said its not uncommon for the belts to last 200,000km (my dad's TE lasted 200,000 on same belt, same mechanic) and I should not bother with it.
Opinions.....

 Nuts........Do it for peace of mind. Recommended every 100,000!! You do not want it to break.
Weigh up the costs - New engine vs. new belt.

If it's due for a change, change it!
Someone i know did 130,000 kms on his timing belt, got to just over 133,000 and snap, belts gone and damaged the motor as well.

Forgot to mention.....he said itll cost me maybe 500$ more if it breaks
......so not 100% necessary at every 100,000?? could take it to 120-130k until bank allows it to be changed?

Can you pop your head in the engine bay and have a look at the physical condition of the belt to check for cracks etc?
Would it REALLY be worth it, if you dont change the belt, you snap it, and are up for a few thousand dollars worth of engine damage.
Even if i was strapped for cash i would cut down on other things to get this done, its not like a typical service where if you dont get it done it wont do much damage.
Just think long and hard about the consequences of not getting it changed and it snapping....

You can take the cover off, not sure how though lol. And yeh you wont be able to see it overly well.

thought that'd be the case....even if you can see a few inches of either side of the belt it'll give you a rough indicator as to its condition.

I changed my timing belt after it did only 105,000ks and it was not looking good, it actually had a hole in one section and cracks etc.
So I think this is why they recommend to change them at 100,000ks.
Its so not worth having your belt snap.

Change your timing belt and your mechanic.

I've seen a couple of Mitsubishi timing belts fail around 100,000km. Yeah it's a mongrel of a job but I've pulled an engine out of a 3rd gen and that's worse. More expensive as well.

I did 145,000 ks on a third gen once.. well actually i bought the car and only found out later that it had never had its timing belt replaced, but luckily it didnt snap, not something id recommend to anyone..
With something like a timing belt, id say change it when its due to be changed, u cant take the risk

So im assuming my dad was just lucky with his TE doing 200k
Best not risk it, Ill just get it changed anyway.....

Find out what your mechanic is smoking, and tell him to leave it alone (or send a Kilo) :bowrofl: :bowrofl:

Was surprised though, he always does brilliant work, has been the only NRMA approved mechanic in the town for as long as I can remember
Also does all the towns police cars etc
Strange.....

thats wierd man....but seriously you better get it changed.....its very un-pretty when they snap.
maybe ring around other mechanics and see what they have to say.
and just for the record, i wouldnt be trusting anyone who was recommended by an insurance company. dad had a prang in an old XF which resulted in the passenger front door and sill to be fixed...we got it back and you could see daylight from the bottom of the door sill lol!!! but that is only a panel beater problem, might not be the case with a mechanic.
