Just Wondering If Any Third Gen Auto's Have Had Any Good Power Gains Out Of
Piggyback Computers?

They usually appear to gain almost as much as manuals but the torque converter seems to rob a bit of power, ask Black Beard. He swapped his car to get the power he thought he should have been making.
And please don't start every word with a capital. Sucks to read.

its not the piggyback that'll give ya the gains its the mods that the piggy back will allow that will

On a 3.5L auto with breathing mods, I gained about 4kW at the peak with a tuned Greddy Emanage. The dyno graph also showed an increase of about 4-6kW for a considerable spread thru the rev range. On the road the difference was definetly more noticable above 3,500rpm.
Then I drove a stock standard 3.5L Manual and it felt a hell of a lot quicker than my modded auto, so I brought it and swapped all the bolt on's and piggyback over for a 20kW gain at the treads (that's 20kW difference between the auto and manual magna with the same mods - not 20kW between the stock and modded manual).

What were your quater mile times in the auto?

15.5 in Qld in the middle of summer. Maybe a 15.3 in better conditions, but I wouldn't count on getting a 4spd auto magna into the 14's unless you are planning on doing at least cam / head work if not some form of forced induction.

i got 3 kw peak power
cant say how much i got throught the rev range...
it seemed to improve response...would say it made much difference on a stockish car

Did it give you any more torque down low?

Are you kidding???? What were your power numbers? 20kw ATW difference between man and auto just sucks big time. I knew torque convertors steal nM's and kw's, but that's got to be more than 10%.
cheers,

121kW at the treads in the auto TJII, 141kW at the treads in the manual TJII with the same mods. Same dyno.

It's official... I'm looking for a 5 speed manual. I'm going to look for a wrecked manual TJ+ to steal the 'box from. 20kw improvement from 121kw is more than 15% gain... grrr, stupid torque converter!

Don't just take my word for it........... these results can be substantiated by members who have done manual conversions as well.

well i havent put my car on the dyno since it has been converted to manual
i got 112kw on the dyno stock
after i put the piggyback, hi flow cat and ralliart extractors on i got 125kw ATW
next week im going to get her retuned (only difference is manual conversion) to see what i get...im hoping at least 135kw...
on the road is all i can say it feels like 20kw difference between auto and manual...even when i had a drag with the manual boys when i was auto i used to get my *** handed to me on a silver platter

It would be surprising to see a gain as much as that if the same tuner tunes in the same manner this time as they did last time.

i wouldn't be surprised... When i swapped the auto off the dohc and the man off the sohc i noticed...
1) auto box is at least double the weight, it was 4wd but didnt have any of the drivetrain to the rear connected... i could barely lift it to move it, i dragged it most of the time and i could lift the manual box quite easily.
2) off the engine the flywheel--> torque converter is about 5 times the size of the manual clutch and flywheel.
I can see 2) making a huge difference before power is put out through the driveshafts.

But he's already dynoed after the conversion and seen the gain. The only difference this time round is that it will be tuned and I wouldn't expect a 10kW gain unless the system wasn't tuned when fitted in the first place.

Well myself and a certain other member both have our tuning done at the same workshop and both had very similar mods (he has port and polished heads but no cai, i had cai but stock heads). Mine was a 3.5 manual and his was a 3.5 auto. There was a 19kw difference between our two dyno graphs.
On a standard car a piggyback is a waste of money. You wont gain any more than 5kw at the wheels. The more done to the car the larger the gains.
