Hiya

Recently checked my oil, and found that it's about 1-2 cm above the "Full mark".

Quite strange, given that last I checked it was normal.....

I recently had a hole in the timing cover fixed up..could there be a leak into the oil?

Cheers

did you check it while it was cold last time (no oil pressure) and hot this time (pressure) or vice versa...

checked it when cold this time round(when it was higher)...should it be lower or higher?

Usually levels drop when cold because of no expansion of molecules. So i'd say it should be lower

a hole in the timing cover? do you mean in the plastic cover that goes over the cam gear?

did you wipe the dipstick first then put it back to get an accurate reading?

erm...the mechanic said it was somewhere next to the engine block, on the passenger side of the car. Cost me $400 to fix...it was leaking coolant all over the place.

yep, i wiped off the dipstick and reinserted it...did it a few times, all came out to be a few cm more than full when cold.

well it runs i guess. :P

petrol consumption has been 17l/100km since (has never been below 15l/100 anyways).

erm, yep, put the dip stick completely in, as far as I remember :P

if he didnt put the dipstick in completly, wouldnt that mean the oil level would have been BELOW the Full mark??

not if it's overfull

sounds fine, should be at high when warm... check it after its run for a few minutes

If it's overfull, probably wouldn't drive around with excess oil for too long.. drain some out i reckon. My old TR had a timing cover leak, had to get that replaced, but never had coolant go into the oil. Maybe check the condition of the oil, and check the colour of the oil in the oil filler cap, if there's any white milky like residue, there's water/condensation etc in the oil, and that is not a good thing at all.. most likely indicating a blown head gasket or cracked head.

When you checked it first time, how long since it was driven? Perhaps when you checked it the 2nd time (after leaving it overnight) all the oil had run into the sump. You would also have the full oil volume, condensation and the rest boosting the oil levels. Someone once told me the optimum time to check the oil is about 1/2 hour after turning off the engine. Make sure the car is on level ground.
