Thinking of cutting my stock stock srpings a little maybe like a coil or maybe even half a coil. Was just gonna get a spring compressor and use my dremel and just cut it off?..i dont drive fast or anything so it will look pretty cool.
Thoughts?
not worth it man. springs are not expensive. defects are. it is dangerous too. i have cut springs before... it was unsafe and scary... and i also got defected and had to buy new springs anyhow....

Its illegal to cut stock springs.
But if u have after market ones (Kings etc etc) Then its ok cus they are heavy duty springs.
Not the best thing to do but an inexpensive way to lower your car.
I cut my kings lows and well with the the shockie out and the spring back in it the spring falls out, but once they are put back in theres no way they will fall out.
Not sure if ur from NSW or not but the legal limit is 100mm from the lowest point, Im 20mm under that, a green p plater and have 19" chromies and i never got pulled over and defected for nething.
I had more trouble with 18" shadow chrome rims and just lows.
Back on topic thou i wouldnt recomend cutting ur stock springs.

nooooooooooooooooooooooooo Yomamma
lol dont do it man. it will be way cheaper and better for you to get proper lowered springs and keep your stock one. if you cut your stock springs it will be very bouncy and unsafe. if you get pulled over and defected you will end up buyin new springs. so id say go buy proper springs (if you want major dumpage get kings or lovells super lows. philcom does king springs for like $220 delivered to you door) or go and get your stock springs compressed but think that will give you same feel as chopped.

I was going to say something along the lines of "if you want to chop your springs...... go and buy a holden, but if you own a nice car like a Magna, do it properly and get the right lowered springs for the job"
But then I read your profile, and according to that you drive a dodgy VN Wagon, so I'm going to go against the crowd here and say:
Hell yeah - chopped springs are the sickest bro!!!
:bowrofl: :bowrofl:
But on the off chance you are considering doing this to a Magna..... then the answer is NO
* I'd just like to point out that I'm not trying to bag Holdens...... I recognise that many valuable AMC member own/drive fine vehicles from the Holden stable...... Infact, while my car is being built, I'm one of them

u can get ur springs compressed at say industrial or something .. thats much safer cos they treat the springs so they dont get brital etc ... dont chop ... though u can chop springs safely and it can be effective BUT as already said not stock springs and DONT DO IT just compress them or get super lows

in my car now i have compressed the springs but in 2 or my other cars i went the chop... no diff man i did 30,000km in my last car with 5 coils chopped off the rear, the problem is that when jacked up the spring can fall out, but this can also happen with compressed springs too, on struts i dont see the problem cos the springs cant go anywhere but on certain designs the springs can fall out of the vehicle, although never happened to me and i used to bounce the car off the gutters.....lol... yes its dangerous etc... so dont do it

It's not that i'd be worried about, it's the fact that you're changing the springs load that it was designed to handle, one of my dads mates when i was younger chopped his springs in his vk commodore and he hit a gutter and the springs couldn't keep the car down and the car flipped.

mine are chopped:D not bad bit bumpy but all good, sits nice too.
If you chop them make sure you angle the top so it sits right

if your going 2 chop them take it of the bottom and dont take half take 1 or 2 so the spring sits in the strut in the same place or it will twist and p off i just cut 1 and a half of mine and it was twisting in the tower better of butying kings

imho, a ~300$ set of aftermarket springs isnt that far out of anyones budget :) lets be honest, most of us have cd headdecks that cost more :)
as mentioned above, cutting springs that were not designed to be altered can have some pretty undesirable effects.
and wrecking a ~$12000 magna cause of dodgey spring chop and not getting ~300$ springs, i know which id rather fork out for :)
go the new springs dude :)

You're a legend Mate! (but only if you fitted them to the car afterwards...)
I have heard that there was a type of spring you could chop. From memory they are the progressive springs. Apparently hard to come by these days. I'd love to know the full story, so correct me if I'm wrong please.
I guess as already stated, don't chop stock springs. Keyword STOCK.

cutting after market hd springs is still very dangerous....once cut you are still releasing the tension of the spring and making the stroke shorter

i used to have kings superlows cut nealy in half..NOT GOOD!! really dodgy ride..unsafe as all f^^k!! ..but yeah, lookd f66king scwheet!!
its realy irralivent that cutting springs is ilegal becaus if you have kings superlows or the lkes and then get them compressed, the car is going to be illegall in TWO ways. firstly the springs will not be sufficiently trapped, and second=ly the car will be under 100mm.
easiest way if you ask me if u want your car Xmm lower(illegAL or not) is just to ring kmac in sydney, tell them how much u want to be dumped,an the'll cutom make u set of front an rear springs for 330bux:D easy.

You make it sound like a rubber-band!
That's because a spring is like a rubber band;)
They both absorb energy and then release it again. They have what's known as a spring coefficient, which when multiplied by the amount of deflection will give the resultant force.
Which is why cutting springs is for dummies. It'd be like removing the tyres and running on bare rims. Fully Sic maaate. :disgusted

Good example. That wouldn't happen to a MAGNA owner!...
So what did you do with the money you saved by cutting your springs? Insurance?
