View Full Version : Amplifier Ground Wire

Got a quick Q as I'm after some ideas.
For those with a 3rd gen Magna with their amplifier mounted in the boot, where have you put your ground wire?

there is a couple bolts that do nothing except fill a hole on either side of the boot floor about half way back.
Just make sure you sand the paint away first so you have a good contact with the metal.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I had a look and couldn't see any bolts?

About the closest things I saw were the thingamajigs to hold the spare wheel cover in, and the bolts that hold the trim in place. However both of them are nylon threaded :nuts: Am I just blind?

Its behind were the amp is. Near the antenna. There is one on the other side in excalty the same spot.

You sould just drill a hole and put a bolt through it your self...

Wow mitsu really have your balls in a vice I guess, just sand back a spot of paint of the possible drill spot and chek it with a multimeter to make sure it is a ground...

Why spend $25+ on a cable and more on connecters when he could just earth it to the body?

Yeah, I was always under the impression that earthing it to the body was more than sufficient in most cases.
At the moment, I've got it amped to underneath the parcel deck. However, I'm having a few slight issues with my audio setup, so I want to play around with the grounds a bit. I posted this picture over on Car Audio Australia, and apparently it wouldn't be a bad idea to try another ground, because of all the welds n stuff on the ground I've got atm. Plus it's in a bit of an awkward spot for wiring.

Why spend $25+ on a cable and more on connecters when he could just earth it to the body?
wen i was running a car puta setup, to get a acceptable ground i earthed the battery with 4G then ran a 4G power cable to the setup, and earthed the setup to the body using 4G, it works a treat and its about the best earth you can get.

Take the carpet off from the side. It should be where the circle is on a metal ledge kinda thing.

Thanks for the help.
Now to rewire my boot. This is gonna be fun - my mate did a bit of a bodge job helping me install it, and he cut all the speaker wires so that there was very little slack. Oh well, the whole thing was somewhat bodge, I may as well rip everything out and start again :P

Thats dodgier than bolting it to the chassis. Where on earth did you get that idea from?
Your running a long cable of say 4guage all the way from the boot to the battery. This has a resistance.
MUCH MUCH better to have as short and fat a lead as possible (same gauge as your power cable to the amp) from the GND or -ve on the amp to a sanded bit of the body or chassis. The chassis is a far better conductor with much less resistance than a 4-5m cable!
Edit:
Just went and got a photo of that bolt. Its on the RH side. Pretty sure there is one on the left as well. I used 4 guage power to each amp, so I have a 4 gauge GND from each amp to the chassis.

thats what i did, but i had two power cables and two earth cable (one per amp) to get through the car, its not fun.:disgusted
haha, yeah, whoever said run a cable to the battery.....
your car chassis is a good ground....technically it is unless you managed to use electrical tape and taped down the exposed end of the cable to the chassis.

If you have bad grounds or "earths" to the body from the battery, a decent wire direct from the amp to the negative terminal will be a better option,but it must be of sufficient gauge, but if you are grounding in the boot,why not upgrade your battery to body earth up the front with some decent 6B&S cables and ensure you are getting a decent ground to the body and chassis,and while you are at it,run some 8 or 6 B&S cable direct from the B+ terminal on the alternator direct to the battery + post for less voltage drop and more grunt to your amps.
When i did my amp install,i riped out the back seat and grounded my amp onto the seat belt anchor bolts,these are chunky and touch plenty of metal under the head and through the thread itself

i used the baby restraint, forget what size the bolt was.
Make sure you sand it back well. Best ground is thick and short. And its more important than your power wire coming in.
Running another wire back to the battery is unnecessary and won't provide a better ground than your chassis.
