this is the closets thread i can think of for this subject... so..
if any u guys have gps in the car, handheld, mounted, and more importantly, do you guys have a hardware dash gps unit, or a pda with a gps plugin?
i was leaning towards a pda with a plugin, mostly for its capabilites ontop of just a regular gps.
my m8 has a pda with a bluetooth gps card in it, and he reckons it da shizzle :)
plus he goes around skulking public wifi points.
thoughts?

if you have a nokia with symbian os or a sony ericsson P910i you can get tom tom mobile and then just need a gps unit. that what i use, on a nokia 6680 works sweet as.
but if you dont have a phone that will work with it then a pda would be okay, i had one i just hated using it as a phone aswell. but i have my nokia in a cradle in the car and its really good, just not a huge screen

Got one of the Navman cheapies which serves me well on the odd trip when I need directions. I like a portable one so I can use it whichever car I'm in, or my GF can use it.
I want to get a inbuilt GPS one because the only time i will use one is in the car. Anyone got recomendations? must be cheap cheap aswell.
i say go with the pda with bluetooth and install the gps software on that. PDAs can be cheap or exxxy, so depends on your needs. You can get universal cradels for around $50 or so. (ill try to find a pic of mine). I actually took out the dash under the steering wheel, and hard wired the power to my power line from the battery (also used for running other random shiz) so i can set the pda up and whack it on charge (its basically the only time i will charge the thing).
if you dont want wiring hanging everywhere, thats why you buy a pda with bluetooth so you can just mount a bluetooth gps reciever under your window. Albeit they are frigeen impossible to find in any retail store.. i went repco, strathfield, dicksmith, strathfield, jaycar, all the phone shops etc and nada. Ended up having to buy one online for $150. Was a snazzy one, however there arent that many to choose from, but it is worth it to go bluetooth. They have sleep mode etc, so they are only on when your pda is local. Ive had my reciever for over a month now and havent had to charge it yet. (its charged off your pda, or cig lighter).
software is exxy. i would like to remind you that it is illegal to download tomtom 5 PN off torrentspy , along with the Australian Maps also off the same location. :D But tomtom is the software to use. I did give Desinator a go , but not as good imo.
Thing is... you can have amc in the car with a pda, and if you pda is a phone, its an all in one system :P If you get the pda, you dont have to worry about leaving it in the car to get stolen etc, and it takes 2 seconds for it to clip into its cradel.
edit* I only have 1 pic of when i first installed it. Will grab you some specifics about the reciever tomorrow.

how much did your setup cost dee?
how much did your setup cost dee?
totally depends what you need. pda can be anything from a couple hundred to a couple thousand.
software = x-$200 (pm me for.. x )
bluetooth gps unit = $150
cradle = $100
if you dont want a bluetooth, gps recievers can cost you $15. The cradle i have allows for a direct connection to the gps unit.. however its more fun watching my passengers dive to save the gps unit flying out the window when i leave it on the dash.. hehehe. (i just need some velcro to mount it).

my new dell x51v is the schizzle @ a smidge under 700mhz! i can play divx movi es, etc, vga output and plays divx at full speed when you disable the internal screen), etc
people here all have CF GPS cards and swear by them, faster response than bluetooth, etc and like $130 from ebay posted and again, torrents are your freind ;)
i will be mounting mine to the left of the shifter and having a socket for power and from headphones to line in on the head unit or a fm transmitter (most likely line in).
if you need any pda software pm me ;)

CF ones are all well and good but what if your lil pda only has a poor SD slot. I dont want to use bluetooth as i dont want to be replacing batteries constanly or having to wire that up aswell as the PDA so any options? i have the software already so thats no problems.

basically, any pda that has the plus/connectivity to support the gps reciever.
eg, a cf-card pda is pretty cheap, a more recent one with bluetooth support, not to pricey.
ive seen pda's of recent spec new around $400-ish.
