Hello fellow Magna enthusiasts
I am new to this web site, Im surprised that I didnt find it sooner. I have a question regarding the installation of Cruise Control to my 97 TE V6 Manual Transmission car. Ive found one brand called Command Cruise which retails for 300 dollars DIY. Its a stalk operated model, the pad operated model is 170 dollars. Has anyone out their fitted a CC themselves, any tips? Should I go for a mitsu dealer fitted model? I am keen to get one fitted before Xmas holidays, sick of trying to stay on speed limit and avoid traffic fines. Thanks in advance.

id prolly get a Mitsu factory one.
but if you go to a 4wd place, they normally have cruze control stalk units for that kinda money, and a very good chance they can also fit them for you. if you can find some one to fit it, go for it. perhaps even auto sparkies can fit one for you.
good luck and welcome to the forums.
i have command cruise control AP60 (the pad operated one) for $150, did it myself in 2 laid-back days.
few things, go to a wreckers and get any Stop switch for your car (dont pay the 30 odd for their clutch switch kit coz its just a stop light switch) The amendments to the instructions will explain how to install that, i still have to do mine.. uh.. tomorrow.
i put the sensor on the passenger side double offset joint but i have a TN, im sure u can find a suitable place. Fun fun silly willy.
Uhh as far as hints n tips go, all i can say id DIY as installation can cost you like $150 at autobarn, and its a good experience if you have the time.
Its all easy to do, and spelt out in the instruction manual, any questions just ask. You wont be disappointed, for the cheapest cruise control kit i could find its fantastic.

I have fitted an after market one.... But on a Hiace campervan :D
it was an auto ... and pretty easy to install.
on a Manual... a little more tricky..... maybe.
But DIY ones are "do it your self ones" meaning they are easy to install if you know how to usea screwdriver, watch a video, use some pliers, use a multimeter.. and run some cabel.
as long as it is for a Manual then Isay you will be able to do it your self...
Id only use one of these type of ones on the freeway and not around heavy traffic...
I use my factory sports one all the time to get better fuel economy since I dont keep putting my foot up and down all the time.

PS Welcome.
Does anyone know what the aftermarket mitsu one is like? e.g. the unit that they fit if your magna didn't come out of the factory with cruise.
I take it that this isn't stalk operated like the factory unit, can anyone comment further on this from experience?

Akko,
After driving a Verada, I can tell you that the factory unit is a stalk operated unit. It also has an extra control switch on the dash.

Akko,
Sorry about that last post, I misinterpreted what you meant. Yes of course the OE equipent CC's are stalk operated. I dont know about the aftermarket mitsu models, would of thought they would be exactly the same as factory fitted units.

No worries nigel, was an easy mistake to make! =)
I've spoken to my local mitsu dealer in the past about this and they say the unit is not the same, the reason for this is that the parts that comprise the factory unit are way too expensive to supply & fit as an after market install apparently so they use a different unit.
My question is, what is the after market unit like in comparision to the factory one and how is it operated; by a switch that needs to be mounted somewhere on the center console/dash area or still by a stalk mounted collar switch like the factory units? - I know which i'd prefer!
Also if I was to obtain the VR-X style Steering Wheel (such as the one pictured in my avatar) that comes with the cruise control toggle switch on it could this be hooked up and used to control the after market mitsu cruise control do you think?

Akko,
Somewhere in the forsale/wanted posts theirs a picture of a dealer fitted model thats been pulled out of a car. Looks like its got a left hand stalk. After seeing it Im glad I bought my Comand Cruise for $300. It looks just as good (not as good as a factory fitted item though) All up its costing $335 plus my time. I sourced a brake switch for the clutch pedal (it fits straight in, they wanted $113 for the clutch switch) I suspect that the clutch operated switch and the brake switch are the same part no. Anyway the brake switch fitted to the clutch pedal will do the job fine. Couldnt be bothered stuffing around with wreckers for the switch. They usually arent a great deal cheaper and usually more of a headache.

fortunately / unfortuantely depending on which way you look at it my car is an auto (atleast for the time being) meaning that the installation of cruise control should hopefully be a simplier process given that there's no clutch pedal to worry about. =)
I'll take a look at the For Sale / Wanted section - Thanks!
Ahh this pic you mean....
I wonder if that's the same stalk you'd get now, hopefully the after market kit has been since updated with a TJ Magna stalk or similar... I couldn't stand it being so different, it'd look horribly out of place otherwise!

Akko,
Yeah thats the post I was referring to. Whatever you decide I woild advise you to stay clear of any second hand system (from wreckers). Without proper instructions you could end up with a useless peice of junk and a stuffed ECU. If your not a handyman type then pay the extra to get a pro to fit it. Will save you big dollars and lots of heart ache in the long run.
good luck with it.

Yeah, if and when I do get cruise i'll be getting it through my local mitsu dealer for sure and for exactly those reasons that you've mentioned!
Though if i can't get it done the way I want i'll just have to go without. =)
