Is this hard to do on my 1993 Verada V6?
This is my understanding of it:
- Put car on chassis stands (or a hoist)
- Loosen auto trans sump plug thingy
- Let most of the fluid drain out then remove the drain plug to get it all out
- Replace drain plug
- Refill the trans through the dipstick to the same amount that came out
Doing this as my auto is thumping into gears sometimes...hoping this might fix it if not then ill get the tps looked at but until then, try the easy stuff first...
Good idea or not?
And how do i go about cleaning the tps or see if its doing its job properly??
Actually, come to think of it, i know exactly how this problem started.
I only bought the car a couple of months ago and was running perfect when i got it then the afternoon i got it, the idle was really low and car was stalling when pulling up to traffic lights so i adjusted the idle adjustment screw in order for it to idle that little bit higher so it wouldnt stall and thats when the auto thumping started...
So maybe it is the tps then?
Any ideas?

More likely to be the stepper motor (Idle Speed Servo)
Do a search on this. You will find lot's of posts including photos.

ok first off theres some things u missed with the auto service.
first off dont put car on stands cos then the car wont be level and ull get the wrong reading.
when doing an auto change u should first go for a drive to get the tranny fluid up to temp otherwise u wont get all the old stuff out and then its a waste of time cause ull mix old stuff with new. u cant just pull out the drain plug and dump it then just refill cause theres still old oil in the converter.
so once uve been for a drive ( not sitting in driveway) to make sure all of the gears have been gone through and warmed up then pull onto a flat surface or driveway and chok the wheels.
now grab a drain pan and put it under the tranny sump. then grab a second tin and then undo one of the oil cooler lines and place in the second tin.
theres still oil in the cooler lines and other nook and cranky places first.
now start the engine and put i n N but never run for more than 2 mins. by now about 1-1\2 lts of oil should drain from the cooler line into the second bucket. then turn off and undo the main drain plug bolt in the tranny sump. then take off tranny pan and scrap off old gasket, now take your service kit (gasket, internal filter and o-ring) swap the filter,o-ring and gasket with the old.
only do up the tranny pan bolts by hand first then one and a hlf more turns. then refill the correct amount NOT with the same amount that came out cause if it was wrong to begin with then ur gonna have troubles.
im not sure on the exact amount the v6 box takes but in sure somone will clarrafiy that.
also to check the fluid level properly u need to have the auto warmed up first or u wont get a proper reading.
now with the tps, just turning the idle screw wont do it u need a multimeter to set it properly
the other one rod metioned is the isc idle speed control motor , well for that u need a tacometer ( bag spelling) as for cleaning it metho-spirits so it evaporates leaving no resedue.
i think u should grab a manual off ebay cos it shows u how to set the tps,isc the right way.
