Conclusions
The further we drove these four, the more the tourney tightened. Park them together toss your cheque in the air and the one it landed one would serve you well. But who wins.....
It's NOT the Vienta.
It's NOT the Acclaim.
Would you believe the Magna almost got up? Almost, we don't like it's steering, can't enthuse over it's only average handling, and find the interior depressing. The performance is only adequate and the fuel consumption is inferior. Yet the Magna has hidden depths in the quality of it's fit and finish, it's sense of solidarity, it's gracious air of refinement. It drives comfortably and quietly, with the impression that it will do so for as long as you wish, come hell or high water.
That leaves the Futura to nose just ahead as the most complete and best rounded car here.

i didnt think that the 2nd gens were that far behind with the performance figures...

... recently a verada with over 200000 ran a 17.5 the exec should be faster... they'd all be tests on auto's?? times certainly show that...
i've found they're faster than the falcons though, but the commodores are faster... not by much. I dont know about the camry's, twin cam but still SOHC aren't they?

i think the Vienta are all V6 and all quad cams.
A v6 "Twin cam" is still SOHC in toyotas books, the "twin cam" refers to the engine having 2 cams, 1 per bank of 3 cylinders. "Quad cam" refers to 4 cams, 2 per bank of 3 cylinders. It's a play on words by toyota lol.

Yep, sure were. The one I had was so smooth, but was an understeering pig. Nice car, but devoid of all excitement, in spite of a nice engine. 3-ZE (93-96) was the same as the early ES300 Lexus, the later 97-2002? ones had the 1-MZ, which was the same engine with coil packs on each spark and a few other bits

geez....thanks for clearing that up....coz i thought the cam was like this thing that you turn on when you want a snack or something..... :bowrofl:
i think if it says it has a quad cam engine..i think it will have a quad cam engine lol

the magna would have to be auto because that robs so much power. my 4 cyl manual pretty much keeps up with falcons and comodores

but while we are on the subject, why do they call the GTO engine a DOHC and not QOHC?

Because it's not a QOHC lol, you mean why not call it quad cam? Well apart from the fact that toyota have trademarked it, i guess they don't want to mislead anyone hehe. Toyota are the only ones i know of that do it.

sohc = single overhead cam (v6 has 2 cams)
dohc = double OVERHEAD cam(v6 has 4 cams)
quad cam = 4 cams on the engine(v6 has 4 cams)
twin cam = 2 cams on the engine(v6 has 2 cams)
its the overhead which means if its got to cams per row of cyl

well having done many 000's of km in all of these cars... slightly different model spec though, i'd rate the falc best, depending if it was an EF of ed... if ef definatley, ed 2nd last then camry, but im comparing vienta grande... top model... then verada... commo last... the EF was tough smooth powerful, although slow on take off once going would hammer... camry V6 only goes damn hard i reckon better than the verada again comparing my own and mates cars... the commo was corse rough and more like a coke can to drive, with the ugliest interior desigh and feel... if i had to buy one of these cars id go the EF... i loved mine, g-teched mine at 0-100 in 9.2 yeah slow but ON GAS, with full tank gas and full tank petrol, + 100kgs in the boot... in terms of handeling the first EF's had massive oversteer problems.... awesome to slide around corners though :D the camry i have never pushed really really reallyhard... but the verada is my pic standard.... although i modded the falc lowered and put 18's cured the over steer taily problem handled awesome for a boat...
the fords were 4.0L and im 50% sure the camry is quad cam, but maybe only duel cam.... has anyone noticed that 2 cam V6's sound better than 4 cam v6's..... esp the 3.0l magna.... mmm sounds awesome the 3.5l is still good... but i had an all alloy 3.2 quad cam in my old car and didnt have awesome sound neither does the alloytech thing.... id say the 380 would sound good..

see how mine sounds when i pick it up... i've found that the v shaped engines be it a 6 or 8 sound the best... boxers do sound good too but the v is a personal sound... the magna sohc's definately sound pretty damn awesome from the engine and extra good with the right muffler...
