View Full Version : Overfilling engine with oil

Yup, you read right. I became distracted and didn't relise I was still pouring the oil.
The thing is the oil level was right below the "low" mark, before I started, and I didn't finish pouring the 4L bottle in, I stopped with what felt like at least a litre left.
Although, upon checking the dipstick it looked unusally full and high after adding an estimated 3L, I will be checking in the morning to see, but should I be worried?
What can happen with too much oil in the engine?
I took it for a quick drive to see if anything changed or would occur, and by the sounds it was running a lot smoother (obviously)
Help would be appreciated.

It'll burn the excess oil

It could also pressurise the sump causing excessive blowby and possibly blown seals.
Not a good idea. Just drain a bit into a clean container and keep it for top ups:D

I'll check it in the morning before I start it to get an accurate reading, if it's still really high i'll drain it. ****ing pain in the *** though lol. Ah well.
Thanks for the help!

ol fart: If quizzes are quizzical, what are tests?
Testical?
yeah it should jst burn the excess oil, but then i guess it depends on how over full it is. if it is still way over the mark, play it safe and just drain a bit of it.
it wont burn 2litres of excess oil (between low and high on dipstick is approx. a litre).
drain it.

It's all good, about a centimetre over, bit of drippage on the road but no a massive amount. Started her up, exhaust is coming out clean, so it should hopefully be ok

I'd really recommend dropping some down to full mark on dipstick. I found this article:
"Accidental overfilling oil into your engine can cause problems too. As the crankshaft rotates it will churn the oil, causing aeration and eventually sustained foam may form. This can lead to overheated motor oil, oxidation and a loss of oil pressure. Spongy aerated oil is hard to pmp. It starves the engine and critical lubricated surfaces."
I heard somewhere also that the pressure can get too high and blow seals, causing all sorts of leaks and problems. Can also cause increased fuel consumption and premature engine wear.

definately drain it off, wont take you long anyway, just jack the car up, undo the bolt that goes into the sump and drain a bit out.
you may not notice a problem now, but eventually u probably will.
dont drive it untill you drain it dude.

I'll check the level today before I do anything, but as far as I can tell, the car isn't sluggish, and is a lot quieter then it was.
Will check today and have a geez.

Checked it this morning, it's now dropped just below the full line, must have burned it off.

Did you measure it when the car was warm or cold?

cold.
lol if the motor was stuffed, wouldn't it be quite noisy, have no pick up what so ever and die constantly? it runs perfectly fine.
