Hey, still chasing that rattle, and it seemed to get worse since I had the timing chain cover replaced.
Anyway, I had a quick read of some how to's on the second gen forum about how you can tighten up the timing chain and I gave it a go, however when I took the cover off I couldn't feel/see a bolt down there I could loosen or tighten, what I could feel felt like a small hole...
Anyoe know whats going on? Did the TP's come with an automatic chain tensioner?

Ok, behind the little cap on the timing cover you should see this.

If you cant see in there try using a mirror. You can shine a torch onto the mirror and reflect the light in and also see inside in the same mirror at the same time.
Adjustment Proceedure
After you take out the 2 bolts and take off the cap you just loosen special bolt 'B' and press down with your finger (or GENTLY with a screwdriver) on the projection (feels like a blunt pin a coupla MM across). While holding it you tigthen up special bolt 'B'.
Put a bit of sealant on the cap and replace it. BE Careful tightening the 2 bolts as they strip really easily (a little silastic on the threads will stop em comming undun).
If the special bolt 'B' or the projection is not there they have come undone and are probably in the sump. If they have you'll hafta take the timing cover off and replace them.
If you dont wanna pull the sump off, just get a bolt from the wreckers and leave the other one in the sump. It wont hurt anything.:D

its just as old fart said , i did this yesterday. take ur splash gaurd off from under the engine (big bit of pastic that stops crap flinging up into ur engine bay). then lie on the ground and look up between the alt and the crankshaft pully (harmonic balancer, biggset pulley) and ull see the cover for it. now take ur size 10 metric ring spanner and undo the 2 bolts holding the cover on. then take off the cover and clean all the mating surfaces very well. then undo the 10mm bolt that looks like a allen key , but only 2-3 turns or ull undo the tentioner and it will fall into the case. now next to the bolt is a little thing that sticks out like a fat needle. mine was stuck so i had to get a ring spanner and move it up and down a few times first. once it was moving i took my finger( only finger) and pushed the little lever down as far as i could, while holding it tighten the adjusting bolt but not hard enough to strip it. then put a bead of rtv (red) sealant around the edge of cover and bolt holes and also a little on the threads and there u go all done . shold only take 10-15mins or so.
here another write up on it and theres lots of info here as well.

Sweet, so you know what size the bolt is inside?
12 or so?
I have the alt out (changing it) so I figured I should check how to do this.
Thanks for the guide, I could feel the fat pin but the bolt was a mistery.
Will let you know how it goes tommorow!

Bugger, looks like they put the wrong cover on the timing chain, the little cover is in the complete wrong spot, and I could not feel the pin I could feel another small bolt.

did you try the mirror trick?:D

Yeah, I could see a metal hole.
From what I can tell my new window is where the red circle is in these pictures.

The part circled is what I can see with the mirror.

That second picture is of an engine that has had a balance chain removal kit put in.
The hole you have circled is where the adjuster for the chains would normally be.
One of 2 things has occurred.
1 your car has the kit fitted
2 the bolt for the adjuster has fallen out and the adjuster has popped up out of sight.
I'll scan some pictures of the normal system and you can compare them to the second picture.:D

seems like I have a dodgy mechanic...
Then again the engine was replaced a few thousand ago, so is it possible I got one with an atomatic tensioner?

Click on the pics to enlarge.
Picture 1 is how all the chains are in relation to each other
23887
Picture 2 is just the cam drive or timing chain
23888
Picture 3 is the silent shaft or balance shaft chain and adjusters
23889
When the removal kit is installed a sleeve goes in the upper shaft hole once its out and a short drive chain is installed in the lower shaft once the shat is out and the oil pump is replaced. This is because the lower balance shaft drive gear also drive the oil pump.
You can see the difference between the my pictures and your second picture.:D

So what would happen if the auto tensioner was install on this engine?

Late model TPs late 90-91 came with automatic tensioners, see http://magna.trynsave.net/index.php?title=Self_adjusting_bs_chain

Is there any way I can tell?

the balance shaft chain guides in these motors are s&*T and wear fast after 10,000k you must adjust the tenstioner as described anyone considering fixing there chain guides just get the balance shaft removal kit and dont dick about with this anylonger, if you have the balance shafts removed and you are still getting rattle all the time i would say you have poor oil pressure or streched timing chain the timing chains have a self tensioner that runs off the oil pump.
on the subject of balance shalf removal is it possable to do this by without removing the engine?

"is it possable to do this by without removing the engine?"
Thats what i would like to know. There was a thread recently about it and the shaft that needs to be removed is to long and hits the body of the car.
What i was thinking if its possible to pull out as much as possible, then cut it and take out the rest.
Is that possible ?

i was thinking of leaving the gearbox engine mount attached and tilt the motor?

Should be able to tell you tommorow! I won't have the kit but I will be able to see!
Oh yeah, I can into a few problems, the car is at the local mechanic, he said he will help me.
That second picture is of an engine that has had a balance chain removal kit put in.
that is a photo of my motor right after i installed that kit :D

i reckon ya need to take the motor out... unless you leave the top shaft in it's hole. that is kinda dodgy... i'd be take the motor out and plug up that oil gallery for that bearing properly

Ok the engine had an auto adjuster, however even when it is fullt out it seems the chain is not getting tensioned enough, should I get the chain replaced or is there another adjuster I can tighten...

Yep and nope....in that order.
I get my chain kits off a guy on ebay that has a shop in melbourne.

$89 plus post. Has all chains, adjusters, gaskets, guides, everything except the gears (which you wont need). If you've got the timing cover off already you mite as well change em. Easy as.

Amazing, I just found out that the engine is out of a second gen, so not only doesn't it have balance shafts it is running at a higher compression!

second gens still had balance shafts... only difference was auto adjuster for that chain and roller rockers.
