View Full Version : Has anyone relocated their interior fuse housing?

Greetings

Can anyone help me out with a minor electrical challenge?

Once again (for about the 15th time I think) I'm redoing my front stage and am after a bit more room in the drivers side kicks for some audio toys. The fuse housing takes up a lot of space there and I want to move the entire fuse housing up about 5 cm, (or more if possible)

Has anyone done any work around the wiring there? I've never taken it off but it doesn't look like I'm going to have a lot of play with the wires. I was just about to unscrew the housing and play around with it, but thought I would do a quick check in case anyone has run into any hurdles.

It looks like I may be able to just flip one of the brackets upside down (in the pic below) and screw it in again, which would probably give me a bit more room.

Any advice from people in the know is appreciated...

its probaly possible but depending on how much wire play you got.

Yeah whats the extra length like. It would be a very big job if you had to extend wires, and probably not the best option. If it just requires unbolting and zip-tieing in the new spot then it is fine.

i haven't done this in a magna but have done something similar in a friends car - we just extended all the wires with slightly thicker gauge cable and re mounted it with screws, although it sounds rather dodgey it looked ok and was more practicle, was considering doing the same thing to my KR just so they are easier to get to (so you dont have to get your head in upside down)

my advice
soldering iron and heatshrink is your friend

:stoopid: I have removed it before to do fronts.. just unbolt it and zip tie it in the new location.. Dont start messing around with the wires..:P

Thanks guys,

Yeah I didn't want to resort to extending wires (cos there's a lot of wires)

Will have a play with it and let you know when an airbag explodes in my face :p

Good luck. Down there is not the easiest place to work at...

Can't say I have, but it shouldn't be to hard, just follow the wires back a bit and cut away at the black tape so you can mve it a bit more.

45 minutes upside down under my dash and voila...

1 - unscrew bottow screw of housing,
2 - unscrew bottom bracket
3 - pull housing out (not screwed in at the top it's just inserted into another bracket
4 - unscrew and remove top bracket
5 - there is a ploom connector directly above where the housing was (circled)

As this is directly above the housing you will need to remove this from the bracket (give it a big twist and leverage off the bracket it will pop off fairly easily)
Just move the connector out of the way as much as you can I ziptied it down, but this is unnecessary as it won't really go anywhere.
6 - remount the bottom bracket upside down into the same holes (due to the shape of the bracket the mount will now sit much higher.
7 - with a bit of force; push the fuse housing up mount it into the bottom bracket in it's new location. (double check the clearance but most of the difficulty you will find pushing it up are the large plooms of wires (which are very strong so you shouldnt be able to break anything)

note: Be aware of wires sitting near sharp metal or leaving them in a position where constant car vibrations can cut them. if in doubt ziptie.

now to install some more toys...
