I think only the Verada and Altera comes with that,
Anyway, my TE Altera has it
Yep, only Verada's and Altreas came with it...
That is one of my pet pev's with the magna is they went backwards with that great light. My TE altera has it but the TJ and TL/TW hasnt.. like wtf...
Edit: Ive heard that it isnt a "light in there, but the plastic bit is itself a light and it has another wire in the plastic for the key (to turn off the imobiliser(sp?)

the clear plastic ring is in all the magna models, its just the verada models have a globe wired up behind it. All you need to do is wire up a globe and fit it into the slot. Just depends when you want it to light up as to what you wire it up to. easiest to wire it to your roof light.

tell all how u go with that one.. ive looked at it and gone wtf... how the hell are u meant to get in behind there to even look at whats there?? go with wtchme's idea i rekon and maybe it'll work
Yeah, someone has looked into this topic before. If you look at your ignition barrel u can see there is a plastic ring around it.
If you can get a globe down inside the barrel then it will light up. You can probably wire some kind of delay-circuit onto it so the light doesn't switch off the second you close the doors. DPDT relay some capacitors and resistors?

how does the roof light's cable run down to the dash eg which pillar?

Wiring wont be an issue.. Getting a globe in there will i reckon.. Are they the same barrel as a verada..?? Will light fit in..??

woot... finally i havent started a pointless thread:P
it would be really good to do this mod (if u can call it that)... just sumthin small, suttle... tell us how u go ego if u attack it tomorrow
i was only thinking about this the other day going from the verada to the magna and how annoying it is, so i looked and saw that plastic, but thats all i got to as far as installing it
The light cost $15 brand new from mitsu.. ive asked them.. can they fit it for me and they said they cant because of the imobiliser wire in it and how each wire is different etc.

There are two ground wires that run down the drivers side A-pillar. The dome light in the roof is ground triggered ;)

yeah altera's rule :D
the question is, how is the lighting controlled?
i'm pretty sure it lights up when you unlock the car, and then turns off once the ignition is started
yer something liek that.
remains on until the car is started or the alarm/immobilsor set on.

i'm not sure how its wired up. the roof light is most resembling the way the ignition barrel lights up though. When you unlock the car it turns on and stays on for 30 secs to a minute or turns off when the key is inserted and turned.
Another way to wire it up would be to use the 12V source for the door light and fit a capacitor/delay switch in series. That way when the doors closed the light stays on for a certain amount of time and fades out.
The clear plastic ring has a provision for a globe to be fitted (same clip system as on your cigarette lighter plug/ashtray plug. I've removed both my ashtray and cigarette lighter so I'll just use the globe & plug from that to wire it up.
To get to the ring, remove the bottom dash plastic (2 screws where the bonnet release is, 1 on the left bottom corner and 1 on the right side somewhere in the middle (theres a square plastic cover over it). Then just pull it off (2 clips on either side of the steering wheel). Then you'll see 2 screws under the ignition barrel that screw down the ignition barrel surround. remove that and there should be 1 screw on the left side fo the barell underneath holding the clear ring on. Your immobolisor antenna is attached to this aswell.

so once u get to the barrel... just work out some way to wire it up.. is the hole for the gobe easily accessable?
Sorry for the mine... BUT!
It's time to illuminate my hole :)
Now, from what I gatherered I will need:
- To tap the dome wire to trigger on/off
- A capacitor for a fade in/out effect (I will place this a little lower down the +12v dome wire to fade the dome too :))
- A T5 bulb holder (Hello ashtray light!)
- A T5 globe (I've got 20 on order anyways)
And I can access the ring by removing the plastic panel under the steering column?
Can anybody confirm that is all?
