Can anyone tell my if my ABS works properly?
When I stamp on the anchors instead of hearing and feeling the slight screeching like I was running over a million little speedbumps like it did on my old falcon, all I hear is a grinding like noise and no screeching of the tires.
My car is a TL ES and although it pulls up pretty quickly I get the feeling the ABS isnt quite working properly.
Is this how it is supposed to work or is something wrong?
if yur worried about somthing wrong with yur brakes id suggest go get them looked at from a mechanic. u dont want them failing on u at any time. even if they are fine after u get them checked then at least u know.

That is exactly how ABS works. The pedal becomes squishy and there's a metallic noise like metal grinding on metal.

My magna's ABS make a grinding noise also. Its done that ever since i bought it brand new. Tyres shouldn't squeek, that would defeat the purpose as the wheels are suppose to keep turning..
If you drive and step on the breaks as hard as you can and they dont lock up, my guess is, its workin :)

Mine have an initial lock up, but then it's the annoying grinding noise taking over

Does everyone complaining of grinding with the ABS still have their genuine PBR rotors and pads? The few times I had to pull up hard with stock brakes pads/rotors I used to hear a horrible grinding noise. Since I've replaced them with aftermarket gear (RDA rotors/Bendix pads) I haven't experienced the same grinding noise.

Yeh i get the same noise/sensation. So i'm assuming it's normal. The car doesn't skid, so i just assume they're doing their job :D.

The few times ive had to use abs, yes you get a horrible crunchy feeling in the brake pedal and it doesn't sound too pleasent. Ive noticed as well that the ABS disables for like the last 10km/h causing the car to skip/slide abit, like the last meter or so.
You know if you dont have ABS, try planting the brakes and you get some slidey action going.

ABS sux, well in the dry anyway... an the wet it's a lifesaver... you should hear tyre screeching on and off repeatedly in the dry... some tyres dont screech as much as others... but a good test is... drive along say at 40km and slam on the brake it should lock for a tiny second before the abs kicks in and you feel it through the pedal

well I tried real hard tonight and couldnt get any real screeching at all.
I've got the stock tires on there, re92? I think and there is only the tiniest hint of a screech.
I think I had the same tires on my old falcon and it did that screeching on and off and it vibrates through the whole car. The magna doesnt do that at all it just grinds fairly smoothly right until the car stops.
After giving it a real hard going over tonight I am satisified it works properly.
thanks for the replies.

I noticed that my ABS used to kick in all the time when I had my RE92's on the car. Now I have bigger, Phat wheels, the abs tends not to be needed so much. IMHO the RE92 is one of the worse factory tyres put on modern aussie vehicles (cheap *cough*). And I don't care that every tyre shop managers wifes car has got them and they think their the best thing since sliced bread either! They obviously don't love their wives much.lol

I think they are the best value for money mate, not neccessarily the best tyre. They're more than enough for your average joe and don't cost a fortune. Not everyone who buys a magna is gonna take it throught he twistys pushing it round corners in the wet :P.

Our old VP commodore used to screech on and off and shake the car, even leaving little checkered marks on clean new asphalt, but I can't make the TL do it (at normal speeds) - I get the same mushy grinding feeling. The brakes are big enough to lock up the wheels, so if you belt your foot on the brakes as hard as you can and they dont lock up its safe to say the ABS is working fine.

I don't push the car that hard but I never felt safe on the RE92's. The 15" Toyo's Transas Teo's felt much safer IMO and cost at the time was about $6 more per corner.
But RE92 do last a long time due to their hard compound.
