View Full Version : How would 17's or 18's on a TJ VR-X with factory springs look?
Hi guys, just wondering if anyone out there has a Magna Sports or VR-X and retained the stock springs - I believe they are slightly lower than the Exec/Advance/Alteras/ei/xi - after putting on 17 or 18 inch alloys.
If anyone could post a picture that would be much appreciated.
Did you think that the car sat too high on the new alloys, while still retaining the stock sports/vrx springs?
Because Bob Jane t-marts has a special currently on, for a set of RJR "Brute" high-polished 5-spoke wheels, with 235/45/17 "Accelera" brand tyres (rims are 17 x 8), for $1099.
To upgrade to 18 x 8 and 235/40/18 tyres is $300 extra (ie. $1399 total), and you get Maxxis tyres.
I'm tempted to get either the 17's or 18's, but I really don't want to lower the car as I need the clearance for the country driving I do a lot of. However I don't want the car to resemble a 4WD and look "raised" either! :)
Has anyone used Accelera or Maxxis in 17 or 18 inch sizes? How do they go grip wise, and also noise and comfort-wise (NVH is very important to me!)
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated, thanks very much
Justin

STAY AWAY FROM MAXXIS VERY POOR GRIP, ok now that thats been said, i spent money on maxis tyres cause they where cheap and all that i could afford. Don't do it, i have to drive my car completely differant now.
Sorry i can't help you out further. But spend money on decent tyres!!

MAXXIS are one of the better tyres out there. A recent tyre test found the MAXXIS MA-Z1 to be the 3rd best tyre in terms of grip in the dry, grip in the wet, road noise & lastability, coming in ahead of a lot of tyres which cost up to twice the price.
I have those tyres on my car with 18 x 8 ROH Fury on standard Ralliart springs (which are the same as VRX springs) and they're awesome. They offer a tremendous amount of grip, little road noise and are of an inbetween compound, so not too hard and not too soft. They only cost just over $200 a corner from memory too, so they're fantastic value for money.

I think Series 1 TJ VRX came with 16's before the Series 2 which came with 17's. Dunno about the Sports.

The Sports came with 16's all the way through every series.
I have 17's and will I was still on the stock sports springs I could fit my fist in the gap between the wheel arch and the top of the tyre.
I've attached pics of my car with 17's factory height and lowered and with the bodykit with wheel arch flares.
I hope this gives you some idea of what they can look like.

I bought MAXXIS tyres on my wheels from Bob Jane and didnt have much of a problem in the area of grip. I upgraded when I replaced the tyres as they were a bit too noisy for my liking.. They also developed a kind of flat stop - although you couldnt see anything on the tyre itself, when driving it started to do that whole "phutt phutt" thing. Not sure if the tyres were just ****ed, or because they were cheap tyres. They lasted a while tho.
As for stock height, here is my TH at stock height with 17s. Just like nathan, I could easily fit my fist between the tyre and the arch at the front.. But the VRX is lower. Just look for a pic of a standard VRX with the stock 17s and you should get an idea of how high it sits.

Thanks guys for all your feedback and advice, it was much appreciated. I went around a few tyre & wheel shops today, and ended up getting 18 x 8 RJR "Brute" wheels in high-polished finish, with 235/40/18 tyres.
Yes still running the stock VRX springs - In my opinion I think the rear sits fine. There is some gap in the wheel arches in front, but not as bad as I had imagined, thankfully.
Road noise is higher now than with the standard 215/60/16, but still within tolerable limits.
Thanks again everyone

Remember your car will drop a bit once the springs get used to the weight of the new wheels.

The sports did, but the VRX got the 17's during the MY02 just before the release of the series2.

From what I can tell in your avatar you have a TJ Sports? They have on the placard 17inch rims as the largest optional rim for the car allowing you to go up to 19's without an engineers cert.
