While GMH production line worker's are going full steam ahead with the new VE.... MMAL have seen fit to offer 100 of there production line workers more redundancy packages  yes Friday August 12th another bad day @ the MMAL office  .....you can read into this what you like but does not sound like good news for 380.. Will be interesting to see the first month sales figures New Camry Vs 380 Series 2..

they needed to build something we wanted.

they are still targeting the wrong audience.

21-40 year old bracket for the 380.

not the 49-80 year old car scene.

I didn't know that yet, but going by recent sales I expected more redundancy's to be offered soon. It seems that the number of people employed at MMAL is getting smaller and smaller.

I wouldn't compare the first month of new Camry sales to 380 sales because the Camry has just been released and despite been not that more fuel economical - is a 4 cylinder car - something that is in demand. Will be interesting to see how Commodore sales go, some people I have spoken think it will be "bigger then the VT" (in sales), which I think is a load of BS, especially considering petrol prices are meant to increase significantly over the next few weeks (and are likely to increase in the future).

I really wish MMAL would hurry up and bring this 4-cylinder 380 to the market. I have come to the understanding that the new 380VRX will be released next March and will be on display at the Sydney International Motor Show. It will have styling tweaks, a more agressive bodykit & stance, a slightly updated/modified interior, some additional features, an 190kw+ engine and from who I have spoken to a price increase of around $1,000.

If MMAL wanted to create some interest in the 380 range and bring alot of people into their showrooms they should try and release the 4-cylinder 380 around the same time, if not before the new 380VRX. Namely because it would increase showroom traffic and give the newer (and more expensive) model some exposure.

I spose the new product launches over the next few months (Now, and October onwards) will help bring interest into the whole Mistubishi brand and hopefully the 380!!

They are releasing the 2.4l mivec engine early next year. They are also in negotiation with Malaysia i think to export the 2.4l 380 next year. If so, then that means at least 15,000 units per annum will be exported... Which is good news for MMAL. Hopefully that will boost the local sales a bit also...

From what I have heard the new 380VRX comes out next year and the 2.4l MIVEC 380 won't be released until late next year. I'm hoping the "late next year" bit is referring to when it is to be exported and not when it is released on the domestic market, as they really really need a 4-cylinder 380 (large car) to compete with cars such as the 4-cylinder Hyundai Sonata, the Camry, the Mazda6 and the Honda Accord Euro (and normal Honda Accord 4-cyl version). The difference between the the 380 is that it offers large car space, and if MMAL can get hold of the CVT transmission in the new Outlander (4 cylinder version) then they could possibly offer the best fuel economy as well.

Rob McEniry is certainly doing his job to the best of his ability, seen in how he has pushed to release imported products sooner, but, I also hope he can push for the 4-cylinder version ASAP. Without a doubt sales would atleast double the month it goes on sale, this is considering the fuel consumption is significantly less then the V6 380 and demand sticks around for mid-large 4 cylinder cars. Don't get me wrong, but if the 380 did get a 4-cylinder engine, wouln't it really be the only large 4-cylinder car (the rest mentioned above are really medium), this factor could support MMAL if they can get it using the same amount or less fuel then the other alternatives and give it standard rear park assist (you'd be suprised how many people dislike large cars because they mis-judge parking them).

Can you sort of change your title? I don't think "380 All Down-hill New's" is that appropriate as not all new relating to the 380 is down hill. Your thread is actually 'bad news' about MMAL, rather then about the 380. Yes, the 380 sales (being lower then the target sales level) caused the redundancy's, but, isn't this news rather bad for MMAL and it's current employee's rather then "380 All Down-hill New's"?

There is also positive news about the 380's future, so I don't think the word 'All' should be included in your title. Something like, "Bad news for the Manufacturer of the 380" or "Bad news for MMAL" would be more appropriate.

Thank you :D

What's with the Thought Police in these forums? It seems that it is impossible to say anything negative against the 380, even in a moderate discussion.

The 380 has big problems, and it's been clear since the start that it is essentially the wrong package for the Australian market. The donor US Galant has had woeful sales on the US market ever since it was released there some two years before the 380, and for many of the same reasons. The omens were never good for the 380. It's a bland reinvention by a cash-strapped Mitsu of the last model Camry. While the engineering on the 380 is first rate, as usual, people get swayed in the showroom by style - look at what Ford had to do to escape the AU debacle. In the lead-up to the 380 release, MMAL said they were going for the Mazda6 and Accord Euro type market. Great idea, except both of those cars actually look stylish and sell well accordingly (helped by 4 cylinder engines no doubt).

Ask yourself: if you parked a TJII VRX next to a 380VRX and surveyed the average Joe Bloggs walking down the street which is the "sports" model, I seriously doubt you'd get many punters picking the 380. It's plain bland (new boss Rob, coming from HSV and VE development at Holden, knows it too, otherwise he wouldn't have authorised precious money be spent on enhancing the current whitegoods-on-wheels VRX). The styling on the other models, including the chintzy chrome grills and out-of-date looking wheel covers and alloy wheels, is very, very ordinary.

I remember Uncle Tom Philips saying in the press back in early 2003 that the then-Magna urgently needed an updated 4 cylinder engine. Well, what happened in the meantime? To turn around in 2006 and say it's now a priority is simply poor strategic management, especially since the engine won't be ready to go until mid 07. ...and yes there have been suitable Mitsu global 4 cylinders available since 2001/02.

Okay, well that's probably enough to get me abused and/or banned...:)
