View Full Version : Neons Updated - With actually Dept Transport rule sheet
Who was it that had the documentation from the pits (transport department) which indicated what circumstances having neons wouldn't incur a defect notice if your car was inspected by the police in WA?
If that document is still around can someone please scan & post a copy of it online somewhere?
Thanks! :!: :!:

basically you can have any colour except red or blue, and you are not allowed to be able to see the tube.
apart from that they are legal in WA
I have green ones that I am intending to put back on after i get some skirts - but ATM currently the globes are visible and it looks not so crash hot - I love my neons - but hey - i prefer a clean install to something dodgy - I installed my own and my mates - and had no issues with the law or breakage - I had mine on for 12 months and 25K km/s with no smashed tubes - except for one that some one kicked.
I will post a pic when i get around to it - ATM though I don't have any on the PC!!

Have a search across the Mogwa forum. There's something there from the WA Gov site before they changed it. I went for a look recently but couldn't find anything.
Isn't green and any other colour that can be confused with traffic signals (e.g. red / green / amber) also illegal? Or have the rules changed recently in WA?
I realise that blue & red are an obvious bad choice because they conflict with emergency vehicles etc - talk about cop bait.

When I spoke to the cops bout it, they said anything but RED is fine, meaning blue is good too.
The tubes must not be visible, and it must be a constant light... no pulsing.
Thats the only rules against neons in WA.

I think it just looks great... end of story.
It does it for some, not for others... usually, those who dont like em, are those who drive V8's and feel threatened by the turbocharged 4's from Japan.
Ever seen a "Built Ford Tough" with bright neons

You would note that it says that if your lamps can be confused with emergency or brake lights it is defectable.
This rules out red. If the cop is an ass, it will also rule out blue.
When I rang the DPI, they also warned me that red is a serious no-no.
Fortunately mine are green - I know that green is a problem in other states because they have a rule stating that they must be a colour not likely to be confused with traffic signals but not so in WA by the looks. =)

Green and UV purple are the 2 best colours without a doubt anyway.
Unless your name is VRXTC and your car is "THA BOMB" to start with and the blue neons look ****ing amazing

Jdub,
I believe that most other states follow the guidlines bellow, but you'd probably be best advised to check with the transport & licensing department in your state to be sure:
INTRODUCTION
This instruction relates to light sources built into or attached to vehicles which, are in addition to legal lighting requirements and which may not serve a predominant safety role.
Examples of this type of lighting include illuminated signs on delivery and promotional vehicles and fluorescent neon tubes on the underside of vehicles.
GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
While minor modifications such as the fitting of non-essential lighting do not generally require Departmental approval, fittings must be in accordance with guidelines in this or any other Transport Division instruction, the specifications given by the manufacturer of the fitting and vehicle manufacturer’s specifications.
SPECIFICATIONS
Non-essential lights may be allowed on vehicles provided they:
• Only emit a low intensity diffused light
• Are not likely to be confused with traffic signal lights, warning lights or any other required lighting.
• Are securely attached.
• Are free of any sharp edges or projections
• Do not restrict the driver’s field of view.
• Do not flash or pulsate
• Do not include a light or reflector that:
• shows a bright green light, or
• shows a red light to the front; or
• shows a white light to the rear; or
• is shaped or located in such a way that reduces the effectiveness of a light or reflector that is required to be fitted to the vehicle.
In all instances the source of the lighting (bulb or neon tube) must not be visible under normal driving conditions.
UNDERCAR LIGHTING
In the case of undercar lighting fitted for cosmetic reasons:
• Only neon tubes specifically intended for use underneath vehicles are permitted.
• The neon tubes should be mounted as high into the chassis or floor pan as possible and away from any jacking or towing points of the vehicle.
• To guard against accidental breakage of the light source, adequate shielding must protect any neon tubes fitted.
• The tubes and associated components must also be located away from heat sources such as the exhaust and moving parts such as the tailshaft, wheels and suspension components.
Hey thanks akko, I'll double check with transport anyway b4 i did anything just to be on the safe side :)
