I have just got a Magna extecutive TS. It is a 4 cylinder auto. I don't know much about this car as it is from my grandparents who don't need it any more (it drove less than 1000km in the past 2 years and has 98000km on the clock. I was wondering what the engine specifications are, is it 2.6L and what is the engine called? is there anything else I should know?
Also how strong is this car eg does it tow well?
Are ther any modifications I can do to increase its towing ability?
How fuel efficient is it? like above what can I do to increase its efficiency?
Any good mods that will help with both towing and efficiency
Any help would be highly apreciated.
Thanks in advance.

The engine is called an Astron 2.

Towing is going to be painful if it's something like a caravan. Some towing suspension probably wouldn't be a bad idea. I would recomend the following things:

-An oil chnage
-Oil Filter change
-Air filter change, go for a K n' N
-Transmision service
-Half decent audio install
-Improved brakes

if you can post a pic of the engine it will help us greatly. or just count the exhaust outlets. also the four cylinder will have a giant 2600 stamped in the intake near the firewall.

edit: should have read it properly and since its an auto dont bother towing it will overheat unless it has an oil cooler. the auto on the 4 cyl robs so much power and torque.

Hi there, welcome!! Yes the TS was the last of the "2nd generation" shape, and quite a nice car, especially with such low mileage like yours. And it certainly helps if you know the history of the car too.

The 2.6 engine is a 4-cylinder, and is called the "Astron II" motor. Yours, being a TS 2.6 Executive, will have fuel injection. (The 2.6 "GLX" has a carburetted version of the same engine - making for less power and more consumption) It's good that you got the injected version.

Personally, I have never towed, but I do know that the 2.6 Astron engine has very strong low-rpm torque. Having said that, there is no need to rev the car out, as it performs best in the low to mid rpm range. (Consumption also increases drastically if you drive the 2.6 hard)

Unfortunately, fuel consumption is not the strongest point of the 2.6. In fact some other owners on the forums might even be able to confirm that a TS V6 3.0 can achieve similar consumption figures to the 2.6

Just my $0.02 worth anyway
Justin

It was just serviced so this should be good except for the the brakes.
Audio came with it. My pa loves hiphop and still breakdances with a plastic hip. I WISH!
Cant get a photo any time soon but how much would an oil cooler be or a transmision swap out.
Are there any recomended engine mods for this car then or is it going to just look and sound good.

Gday and welcome mate :).
I have the motor as you but in a wagon, it doesn't have tons of power but it does have a fair bit of low down torque. I've done a fair bit of towing with it and never had any problems with it. Having the auto is excellent for towing, it's a lot better on the drivetrain. Yeah the fuel consumption is a bit of an issue:doubt:. Although with the govt. rebate on LPG systems it may not be that bad soon for me:D

'Astron II' is like a nick name for the engine. Mitsubishi actually dropped this name as of about 1989, I think it was from TP Magna onwards. The proper name for the engine is as you said, '4G54 SOHC'. It's basically the same engine that was in the Sigma. They are a damn good engine if you keep the maintenance up. (They don't tolerate neglect too well) Decent power in the TR/TS engine as well. I think they pull just over 100Kw when you run them on PULP. Keep them serviced regularly and clean oil in them and they'll go for ever. (just about) I might get blasted for making this comment, but I think the 4cyl is a better all round package than the 6cyl in the TR or TS.

Well, you're certainly entitled to your own opinion, but ...

taken a v6 manual TS for a drive lately?

the v6 has more power and torque but we are talking is it a better engine? youve got to consider it was out of the sigma and the first gen magnas so thats 7 years since the first astron 2 motor in a magna plus whatever it was in the sigma so a very old engine. but i personally like it better plus its perfect for turbo  large capacity per cyliner:badgrin:

Ha... I knew I'd stir up a nest with that comment. No-one bothered asking under what criteria I'm judging the 4G54 TR to be a better package than the V6. I know the V6 is a nicer drive than the 4, I used to have one. The v6 is a great engine too. However when a car turns 13 years old, to me the the cost and ease of maintenance, parts availability, and economy is more important. Gimme the the old AstronII please.
