You could try some after market jobbies from a Supercheap or similair... brands like Narva etc... http://www.narva.com.au/ForwardLighting_15.html

Something like that shouldn't be anymore than about $150 - $200.

If youre paying that much for driving lights then dont expect anything decent..

Something like the Hella FF75's turn up regularly on Ebay, they are a very competent driving lamp, small, Freeform reflector (hence the FF) that use a 55W H7.

Only problem is that you need a lamp bar, and they don't fit properly - you have to modify the bar. Other alternative is something like a Hella 181, or 500s - on a lamp bar. These do fit, unmodified IIRC.

Driving lamps need to be mounted reasonably high, preferably at the same level as your headlamps. They are pretty much useless at the level of the factory *FOG LAMPS* (not driving lamps dammit)

Xenon driving lamps are only useful for offroad due to their slow warmup time.

I just bought a pair of 'el cheapo' oval driving/fog lights from eBay, measure 45 x 60mm, 55w H3 bulbs, $20 for the pair. They haven't arrived yet though. There are a lot of similar packages for similar prices on eBay too, if you don't like that style or whatever.

I've fitted driving lights to my TJ and KR.

I live "in the bush" and wildlife is a constant danger at night on the roads around here.

The KR has a solid metal bracket that the number plate bolts to. I used a light bar,
the holes on the light bar line up with the number plate holes....fitting it took five
minutes.

But the light bar (without modification) only suits the smaller sized spotties. There
are slots for the lamp body bolts....12mm maybe? Some lamps have a bigger mounting
bolt - 14mm. Also, the deeper bodied lamps don't have enough room to sit there. One
can use spacers to move the light bar out from the number plate a bit, but there is
still only limited room. You want to keep the front faces of the lights behind the front
edge of the light bar (legal issue, plus they would be vulnerable to "park by feel" types.
My young bloke did the wiring.

The TJ has no such solid mounting bracket, so I fitted a nudge bar. I then bolted on
some Nightstalkers from Supercheap, intending to replace them later with Cibies or
other noted brand. But the Nightstalkers are ok. Not the best, for sure, but they
do the job and I reckon they are good value for money.

Once I bolted the lamps on, I mounted the relay next to the air filter box, fitted an
on/off switch inside the cabin (too near to the driver's left knee as it turns out), ran
wires to it, ran wires from the lamps, but didn't connect anything up. I used spiral wrap
to protect the first metre or so of the wiring from the lamps. I got all this stuff from
Supercheap. The lamps included a relay and the wiring but I ditched the wires and made
up replacements out of heavier gauge wire.

I then got the local car workshop to finish off the wiring, while it was there for a roadworthy check (NSW to Qld rego change). They charged me something like 20 minutes labour.

The nudge bar is probably overkill just to mount driving lights, but I wanted some protection
against roos and shopping trolleys, and a full bull bar was just too expensive, heavy, and
ugly.

If I did it all over again, I would only change one thing. I would get the nudge bar on a "supply and instal" basis. Step 1 in the fitting instructions was "remove the bumper bar."
It took me hours to fit it, with much cursing.

The lights make a big difference. I now have a good chance of seeing wildlife in time to
dodge. But you have to be careful when changing to low beam.....the instant loss of
heaps of light up front can make it hard to see where you are going!

While on the subject of lights.......a well meaning person gave me a present of a pair of
lamp globes....they don't fit anything I drive or have ever driven, and are no good to me.

Lets see (reads info on the pack) they are NightVision 30% brighter (it says so!) 12V 65/55W
HB5 globes. They look like H4 bulbs in a mounting base. I was going to chuck them out, but if anyone wants them, for free, pm me with a postal address and I will send them to you. I
have no idea what they fit.

Regards,

Old One.
