Hi

I have a 03 TL ES MAGNA - Auto.

Got in my car after work today.

It started first go like normal.

I then went to move off and it went no-where.

I turned the car back off and back on and it would then move but,

1) The light that shows what gear I am in is not showing up.
2) Speedo is always on 0.
3) Car moves off very slowly and has no real power.
4) Odometre does not tick over.
5) When I put the car in reverse it clunks and shakes a-bit.

It does not sound like it is over reving and the tacho seems to be in line with what speed I think I am doing.

I will book it in to Mitsubishi tomorrow (Would have gone this afternoon, but it is a public holiday in Qld)

Does anyone know what this may be and do you think it will be covered under warranty?

THANKS

Should be covered under warranty mate, no need to worry :). Very bizarre problem though.

Have you gotten some form of person or animal caught up under it?
PS. Is the handbrake off? JJ

Check your gearbox fluid? If its running dry it will go nowhere... sounds like a gearbox issue.

Just found a person under it. What a mistake!! and the handbrake was on!!!

Must have happened whilce I was doing a handbrake turn over that person.

Only Kidding. First thing I checked!!

Will check the fluid. No warning lights were coming on and it was serviced at Mitsubishi 3 weeks ago.

Its a TCU problem. I had a similar situation where i couldn't even put it into gear. The
engine will conk out. The TCU died and the ECU says "hey no tcu, can't have the engine
running."

Dumb question, but is TCU Transmission Control Unit? Did you get it fixed under warranty?

THANKS

Nah, paid $500 for it. It was for my old KS. Yes, TCU is Transmission Control Unit.

for starters, the TL has no "tcu".. the auto trans ecu and engine ecu are incorporated into one! so no, the problem is not the "tcu". i'd be willing to put serious money on the problem being a fault in the auto gearbox.. sadly, some TL's stuffed up! check the auto oil again, and i reckon it'd be black as the ace of spades, and burnt! check trans codes, and you'll find... 1st gear not synchronising, 2nd gear not synchronising, etc!

Mitsubishi mechanics think it might be wiring from the towbar cable that has come loose and shorted out a few of the fuses and components. This forces the vehicle into limp mode, where the vehicle drives like it is continueously in 3rd gear.

They are still investigating further to make sure it is nothing else..

Stinks if that is the case as it will not be a warranty issue.

If is not a factory towbar they wont cover it.. Going into linp mode aint bad.. its a safety thing..

Funny.. sharkie had a issue with his auto too and it turned out to be a wire on the towbar.. lucky for him as he had only just brought the car..:(

Dont you have to use Mitsubishi to get warranty work done?

Yeah, warranty work. But general serving (ie. oil changes etc) don't have to be done at Mitsubishi.

Its not just Mitsu that use apprentices that can't even blow their own noses. I've had a
bridgestone tyre centre apprentice spend 4 hours rotating and balancing my old KS wheels.
Kmart auto, ultra tune, you name it, they all use apprentices. How do you think they make
their money. They charge the same rate whether its an apprentice working on your car or
a 50 year old with 30+ years of experience.

Let's not bag the apprentices eh ;) I know that I got a few bolts and stuff kickin around home from TE+ magna rear bars but the bolt above the exhaust is a **** to put on :p

Exactly right - that's why I use a sole trader mechanic with no apprentices who has 25 years experience.

And if anyone is in the north of Sydney I can recommend a good one.

Try this

Use an OBD2 autoscanner. I bought mine on ebay for $41 plus freight. Model number U380.

It can read all generic codes and up to 999 codes total. Yep 999.

Has two line LCD display, read button, erase button and connects to OBD2 connector near R/H of console just up from gear stick.

Hope this helps.
