View Full Version : Rear garnish lights

Well many have asked how to do this via PM to me in the past so to answer all your questions here are some pics of what things should look like.
First of all unless you have a Magna Elite, KR XI Verada or KS EI or XI Verada you will be needing the rear garnish, either cut holes in your boot lid or get a new one and wiring. The globe sockets I got from a wrecker off a TN sedan.
While I have chosen only to have brake lights in the boot you could have brake and tail.
The set up for me is as follows, x's being brake lights o's tail lights
Brake
xxx x xxx
oo oo
I also had to change the inner holder in the main lights to cater for brake and tail light as they only cater for park lights.
The wiring, well I am very pedantic when it comes to working on cars, I got hold of some genuine wire for the color codes, wired it in to the original harness thus making it all but impossable to tell I have made any changes at all.
For all connections I have soldered and used heat shrinked, I do not believe in crimp terminals unless there is no other choice and if I have to use them I still solder the cable to the terminal and still heat shrink to insulate it.
Hope this and the pics help, wiring is simple, if you are not able to simply find and splice the cables I would strongly suggest you get someone who can do this as given the length of the cables from the front of the vehicle a short in the rear can lead to fire before a fuse blows.

um what is it you have actually done? that last complete pic doesnt look very complete? is this to add the special garnish from the veradas or to turn your current garnish into a lit one?

If you read the title and the post together you will see what I have done. The last pic is so people can see what is required as far as the boot lid goes as there are different ones on different models.
The little diagram, although not very good shows how I have connected all the lights for the brakes.

He's done something similar to mine except that the boot mounted lights
of his is only for braking use.

There are a series of nuts in behind the boot lid. undo these and the 2 bolts that hold on the numberplate.

I know this is an old thread, but instead of starting a new one i'll just continue from here.
Just a question, where can you buy extension wiring from so you can put hook up the garnish lights to the rear lights? Or can you use existing wiring from the magna you'r pulling the lights out from?
Cheers :)

Nah i havent done this i have a smoothed garnish i made myself:)
Well if you want it to come on with your brake lights, easiest option would be to just tap into your parcel shelf light, thats what i did to hook up my spoiler light.
For parkers.....id say you'd have to find out which wires are for the parkers on the brake light mounting board thingy

:D Sweet man
I pulled out the cluster from the old TS and i'm going to hook it up to the licence plate lights wiring. I only want the grille to be illuminated as parker tail lights, when the headlights are on anyway. Reckon it would look alright that way?
So the original brake lights light up and the grille will just be illuminated like parkers?

I hooked up a tail lamp to the garnish light compartment.
I connected it to the licence plate night light. It doesn't illuminate as a stop lamp.
As an extra tail light, it looks good! And get's rid of that standard magna look from behind.
Waiting for the sun to set so I can check out what it looks like at night.
At the moment, with this pic, you can only see it a bit :D
When I get a chacne to get some long wiring, i'll hook up the brake lights by tapping into the parcel shelf rear light. But for now, i'm quite happy with it as a tail light

That looks heaps nice :D
Here's mine
I did it to my old KS. Skotty has it now. It had 6 break lights + centre highmount one and
6 tail lights.

Vlad, did you hook up the grille brake lights to the rear parcel shelf brake lights for it to work?
The grille tail/stop lights are a nice mod! They really make a difference in the appearance. I hate the standard "2nd gen magna" rear lights look lol

No, I wired each boot mounted tail/stop light to its respective main tail/stop light. Its all
hidden behind carpeting except the bit where it goes along the boot arm.
Nothing like blasting someone with lots of red light to make them realise I'm braking.
Do a search on the topic as I've written a very detailed how-to on this.

You will also need to ensure you have the KR XI or KS EI/XI boot and garnish. The TR Elite also had the same

This mod is probly best suited for a TS thats for sure, at least until someone gets the centre "Mitsubishi" labelled portion to light up too. Can someone post pics of how you mounted the lights inside the garnish.

Just get the holders from a wreckers.
They're quite small man. And you just screw the existing bulb in.
I'd post pics for you but I don't have my camera at the moment!
If no one does it, i'll post some this week :)
PM skotty to ask him to take some photos. Actually, that reminds me, I've posted them
before.
Here (http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/showthread.php?t=11867&page=2&highlight=brake+dual+filament)is the post I did before. Pay particular attention to the 2nd to last post on the second
page.
Killbilly should've made it a sticky faq but I guess he ran out of time to do it.

Yep that's what I did! Great photos!
But I used the smaller tail light instead of the larger bulb. Might change it to the larger bulb?

I initially had a smaller bulb holder for the boot one, but it was too dim, can hardly notice it
during broad daylight. The larger twin filament/offset bulb holder with the 21/5 w bulbs are
the standard brake/tail light bulbs and do a much better job. As I mentioned I got the extra
holders from the wreckers.

Great advice. That's the exact dilema i'm going through at the moment haha.
Smaller bulb is not noticeable in daylight!
Going to change them over today or tomorrow.
But will the larger bulb replacement look more brighter than the section with the smaller bulb (on the original lights) at night time?

No. I use 5/21 watt bulbs for all six and they are equally bright in both 5 watt taillight mode
and 21 watt brakelight mode. See attached pics

As Vlad said use normal 21/5W bulbs and it should look like ya normal brake/tailights mainly cause there the same bulb they use.
While your at it get the LED ones.....That'd look magic:D

I'm changing that setup when I put it back in (took it out for a while) only going to have it so the garnish lights up when you brake. ahh I love those pics of muh baby :D lol

Sounds good man!
Na I reckon leave the parker in the garnish on.
Looks good like that. If you just put brake lights in the garnish, it'll look like the normal second gen magna rear lights setup when you're not braking. And just look like your everyday magna :shifty:
I think you should keep it as it is now. Looks great!

This is very inspiring. I did that to my magna, but with one small change...
i managed to light up the Mitsubishi logo!!
