View Full Version : Cause of Whoosing noise in some older RPW Headers

The owners of some earlier RPW race headers know the whoosing noise I speak of. The cause of which was the accidental use of a single braided Flex coupling from the front bank of headers. I am of the understanding that this was corrected some time ago. However, there are still several members who have this noise so I thought I'd post this solution.

The first picture is the single braided flex that over a certain RPM/Engine loading, exhibits a whoosing/whinging noise that personally gave me the *****! The second picture is an example of the correct double braided flex that does not produce any audible noise at any point in the rev range.

are the inside dimensions the same. the double one looks less?

Most of that is camera zoom. The double braid might be 2mm smaller but flow characteristics would be more laminar than the single braid. Pressure drop across the flex would be pretty small anyway cause it's only a couple of inches long.

I think I know that sound, considering mine (headers) is quite old. I kinda like the sound tho...

Personal preference I guess. When I put my foot down I didn't want to hear the exhaust whistle:nuts: , I wanted to hear the engine roar!! :D

Old Stock?? Or maybe they've only just realised :doubt:

I was under the impression that had been sorted some time ago. Anyway, the fix has been posted. Not much else on the Web about this sort of problem.

I got mine in November and it makes the noise. So who fixes this, RPW or us? If us, how much is it going to cost?

Could you also describe it as a rattly rasp?

Yes. It starts at about 3 grand and when you lift off the throttle above 3 grand it sounds a bit like a BOV. I don't know how many times I've been asked excitedly if my car is a turbo because of this.
I thought it was normal after I got the extractors as everyone else who had them had the same noise. It's not a particularly nice noise, and if it's because of a rattle or incorrect parts used, I'd like to get it fixed.

If you're in Sydney, Liverpool Exhaust should be able to sort you out. For me being in Melbourne, I just got a local shop to do it for me. They looked at me stupid when I said I wanted to cut out the "perfectly good" flex coupling and asked me why i think it's the front flex making the noise. After they replaced it with the double braided type, they said, "yeah, we've heard of this before..." I thought to myself "you heard this when I told you yesterday!!"

It's hard to describe a noise cause everyone hears it differently. One thing is certain, the noises starts around 3K and gets louder all the way to redline.

I think $100-$120 should cover the replacement front 2" flex coupling and labour cost.

So it's only the front flex? Did they use double braid on the rear one, or does it just not make the noise?

I can't be 100% sure but I believe it is double braided. In any event, the guy I spoke to at Liverpool exhaust said they have never had a problem with the larger, rear flex coupling. Only the smaller front one.

I only got mine a month or so ago and it was made then. So they only rectified this recently. I'm still trying to get my exhaust shop to talk to them. As EGO can witness mine were particularly bad, rattle rasp buzz all of the above. Hopefully it can be sorted, it really defines the exhaust note at the moment.

This is only a problem that we have heard or become evident to us in the last, say 2 months when we had a report from one customer about a noise and then he had it investigated and the problem was found to be the incorrect use of a single braided flex joint in the front section of the pipe only.

Up until two months ago, we did not know of any issues nor had anyone report such a noise to us.

Since then we had only heard of 2 other people who had found this noise annoying etc.

We will be speaking with our manafacturer liverpool about this but ultimatly for those that find it annoying, if you are in Sydney then Liverpool will rectify it for free I beleive.

For those outside of Sydney, if you contact us with proof of purchase, we will arrange with liverpoor exhaust to arrange a replacement flex pipe section.

Awesome, thanks for that. I'm in Sydney but I actually bought mine through MRT performance, one of your Sydney suppliers. Can I just take that invoice to Liverpool? It doesn't actually say RPW on the invoice, just "Extractors suit street" (even though they are the race extractors). Will this be enough or should I go through MRT?
Thanks again.

Yes contact Liverpool Exhausts and when they see the vehicle they will know the units for what they are
