Its about time to change my plugs, all 6 of em.

I remember reading somewhere about putting plugs out of a 3.0L in can be better performance wise? Is this true or did I read it wrong?

Opinions?

Would be good if somebody could recommend a brand and model so I can just go ask for that specific plug and be done with it. Same goes for leads.

Cheers fellas.

I don't think your going to see much better performance out of different spark plugs, so long as they spark they should all do the same job.

And if there not sparking enough your O2 sensor will pick it up and either report a problem or put more power into the plug.

Spot on :)

Go and buy some NGK or BOSCH replacements and dont spend more than 3 dollars a plug. The reports of more power/torque etc are from people replacing old faulty plugs with new ones and the motor then runs properly.

Its a bit like a wick and the stick of dynamite. The size of the wick is not important.

Hi L...
The 3.5L Magnas addressed required pollution control specs with EGR and retarded ignition timing and so needed to go to a hotter plug

When you mod your engine with CAI, Hi-flow air filters etc you may have a leaner air-fuel ratio and higher combustion temps - in any event you should first check the plugs for colour

Greyish plugs are OK but if they are white or yellowish then they could be of too high a heat range and you could go to NGK BKR6E-11 plugs as used in the 3.0L

These need to be changed at around 45Kkms or go to Platinum PFR6J-11 (90Kkms)

If the plugs are not all of a consistent colour, or the spark plug leads have more than 100Kkm service then consider fitting new leads as well as using fuel injector cleaner

Changing rear plugs in the 3Gen V6 means removing the plenum/manifold for access, so IMO use Platinums all round

Also check the exhaust pipe - if you have an accumulation of soot (which tends to clog up Cats) you can improve it by using the fuel rail kit

If after all service checks have been carried out the exhaust pipe is whitish, fitting the Ground/earth tuning kit will help restore air-fuel ratios and show a greyer pipe

With the spark plug leads I find the genuine ones are OK

Cheers, Barry

Barry (or anyone else who would know),
I'm yet to check out my plugs since the Turbo install, but I've been advised to go to plugs that are "2 or 3" ranges cooler. In you opinion would the 3.0L V6 plugs be suitable for a turbo application in a 3.5L?

Cheers.

Hi BB
I havn't actually owned a turbo so I can't speak from solid experience - but I also have heard to go 2 ranges and check it again

You will know better when you pull the front 3 plugs out, but I can say NGK always seem to work well

Are there currently any issues with driveability, and do you know what type is in ATM?

Maybe if you can find someone with the colourtune kit, it will give you a good indication

BTW great thread on your Turbo

Cheers, Barry

Current plugs in the car are NGK Iridium IX (BKR5EIX-11) which I assume are listed as the replacement plug for the OEM plugs, because that's what I asked for when I purchased them.

The current plugs have done well below 10,000km at this stage, and I just pulled one out to inspect it and there wasn't any discolouration on the ceramic shroud, and the car drives fine. I guess I'll just add them to my list of things to be upgraded/replaced post turbo install and just monitor them in the meantime.
