View Full Version : noisy auto gearbox

hey i have done a few search didnt really find nefing specific. on cold start the gear loud whether u put it in D or R and it quiets down if chuck in neutral. the noise seems to be coming from the gearbox. but it goes away wen the engine warms up. can any1 help with my delima. i have a 96 te altera

maybe its time to change the tranny oil, check the dip stick see if its black then u need to change it :think:

cant remember if noise was there before service. i dont think i used mitsubishi fluid.i serviced it as soon as i bought it. should i change the fluid at my next service to mitsubishi fluid

I'd be tempted to change it before then if possible.. don't want to cause any further damage!

Does it sound like a loud grinding noise? or like one of the gears is loose? Coz i have that too. I never worried about it. Did the oil changes etc, but still have it. And yes, i use the mitsi oil. Once its warm, it goes away.
Basically i dont care about my auto tranny anymore. Once its gone... hehehe got something planned ;)

with loose gear, i kinda mean like the gear is loose and vibrates while spinning. i dunno how to explain it.:)
But yeah, i think we both have the same issue. Probably from too much thrashing.. like me ;)

Just as a rough guide mate, remove all the drive belts 1 and a time and drive the car quickly when cold. It might be the air con compressor or alternator making the noise as they can be noisy when cold then go away when hot.
