i dont think this is normal on a standard motor. ive seen full length pipes glow red on 800hp+ blown big blocks doing burn outs with very litle airflow.
on a freeway, doing legal freeway speeds and activities, i doubt that a motor will glow its headers. ive been wrong before though......

It will be either a blocked catalytic convertor, or unburnt fuel burning in the exhaust system. Neither is going to be a cheap fix.

If you're talking AstronII, yeah it'll be a collapsed cat or your carb running really rich
before your manifold will get anywhere near to red hot. It'll cool off within a few mins.
Back in uni daze we had an AstronII on a stationary bench bolted to a waterpaddle load.
We would rev this to about 4000rpm and keep it there for like 10-15mins before it glowed;
there's no airflow around engine apart from the slight breeze from radiator fan.

not cheap... your scaring me... but after getting this fixed will it get better fuel econ...? and shouldnt this effect the engine temp... any idea of prices for the catalytic??? and take it to an exhaust joint or mechanic???

After going up panorama at some stupid revs in 2nd at the top of the mountain i pop the bonnet cause it smells funny, well low and behold the headers are glowing, faintly but are glowing so maybee it is normal?
I don't think anything is wrong with my car and it still flogs me mates WRX hehe so i wouldn't worry too much dude...
