Hi Everybody,

I have a slight problem that does seem to go away on my TH Sports magna... It is a humming noise coming from the rear wheels. The sound is more like something is vibrating and it's a constant noise from 60 - 100+ KPH. At first i thought it was a rear wheel bearing.. so i replaced both but the humming noise is still there.. I then thought it might have been my tyres, they had around 65% thread so i replaced them but again...the humming noise still there as in very annoying now.. If the magna had a rear diff i would have assumed i needed a new diff but as you all know magna's are front wheel drive!.... Anybody had this problem?.. any ideas on how to fix it?... I drove it to the local dealer and they said it was a wheel bearing however i walked away and did not mentioned i had already replaced them...

any help would be appreciated..

Thanx in advance.

Sounds to me like rear wheels bearings.. or cheap tyres..:P

The tyres that i'm using are the bridgestone GIII so i wouldn't say these were exactly cheap.. and like i said.. i have replaced the wheel bearings... any other ideas?

The tyres could have a chunky tread on them which may be causing the noise. Some tread patterns can cause a humming...

1. Over or under adjusted parking brake shoes (dragging) ???

2. One dragging disc pad. Jack car up with both back wheels off the ground, rotate and listen.

3. Take wheels off and do the same.

4. Apply the footbrake, release and spin discs over, listen for noise.

5. Apply handbrake firmly, then release, listen for noise.

Put the wheels on.

6. Increase tyre pressure to 45psi, go for short drive - listen, drop tyre pressure to 28psi listen for noise. (or a change in the noise)

7. Borrow another pair of wheels with different tyres.

8. Sounds weird but are you sure the noise is in the back of the car? (put someone in the back seat with the windows down, sit in all three seat belts - find left or right side noise)

Good luck

Hi all,

Thank you for the advice, i ended up leaving the car down at the local mitsi dealer for the day. The problem turned out to be a warped rear disc brake which also happen to create funny noises with the handbrake... the noise was as if something was vibrating under the car but a new disc and hand brake readjustment fixed everything. A rear wheel alignment was also done for good measure and the car feels like new again. :)
