UPDATED WITH GUIDE.

My latest diy project saw me putting in a couple of cold cathode tubes and putting in some 4led T10 wedge bulbs, blue of course, they are much better then the single led bulbs, heaps brighter as you can see from the screen shots.
I got them from Autobarn, just make sure they have 4 leds per bulb. They cost $16 for two, you'll need 4 for the gauge cluster.
The cold cathode tubes I bought on here ages ago, only installed recently, there is a wire that runs to the interior light, its on the drivers side, Its behind the plastic cover that goes from the top of the dash to the roof lining, prise that off and its there, I tapped into that for the cold cathode tubes so it only comes on when the door opens, I also put one under my seat and that turns on when the headlights turn on.
Next mod I think will be some alloy foot pedals.:D

GUIDE TO INSTALL

Can this be done to the whole console? like the aircon controls ect aswell?
I might get on it :P

Ok, lots of replies, I'll try to remember everyone.

Yes I did mine but still used the bulbs, just put them coloured silicone sleeves over, made them red, they are not as good as leds though so they will be changed soon.

The aircon controls fan etc are a pain in the ^%$# to get to, only attempt it if you have heaps of patience and an afternoon to kill.

You start by taking off the lower gear selector panel, the one that goes around the gear shifter, it basically just pulls up, start at the back near the centre console lid bin thingy and just pull it up.

Then remove the ashtray by using a flat head screwdriver with a cloth over it, there are four clips from memory, I've done two of these cars and almost always the two bottom ones will break off, just happens, no biggie as it goes back in sweet.

The top section, the thing with fuel light, I think later ones have trip computer there? That needs to be prised out a little bit so you can get to the fan controls, use your screwdriver with cloth over it so you dont damage it.

Then this is the tricky part, there will be a few plugs etc that need to be uncliped before removal can take place, be gentle.

The hardest one by far will be on the right hand side, it's a cable connecting to that little control that has a blue symbol on top, black and white on bottom, its a pain, but somehow manage to get a flat head screwdriver between the head of the cable and the conector and prise it off.

After much cursing  and saying you hate cars, you wanna take a baseball bat to your pride and joy etc the clip comes off, all praise mitsu.lol Breathe a sigh of relief, as its no easier to get back on,,,,hahhahahaaaaaaaaaaaaaa.

Anyway, you will now be in a position to pull out the control casing, and the little lights are on the back, its very easy to pull them out and replace with whatever colour bulb you want, they are the really small bulb, not the T10 wedge type.

To put it all back in is a reversal of this process, except this time use some pointy nose pliers to get that anoying cable head back on.
Also make sure your hazard light switch is connected, if you dont then notice how the blinkers dont work anymore.:)

NEXT.

This ones for the speedo cluster!!!

Okies, lower your steering wheel to the lowest point possible, then take a short philips head screwdriver and remove the two screws at the top of the cluster surround.
Pull it out from the top then the bottom.

Pull out the accesories plugs you have in the back of this panel, like the dimmer switch etc.
Put this aside.

Then take a long magnetised philips head screwdriver and remove the four screws holding in the cluster.
Magnetise the screwdriver by running it over the back of a speaker, do this in a round sweeping motion from one end to the other then lift off, do it again a couple of times, it will become magnetised, you'll need to do this so you dont lose the screws into the abyss of the back of the dash, you'll see what I mean when you get there.

Ok at this point the cluster should pop out toward you, it will still have a wiring harness conected to the back of it, unclip this harness before pulling out completely.

On the back of the cluster unit will be lots of bulb holders, identify the 4 large ones, they are the ones you want to change over, remember too that they are negative and positive, so sometimes the bulbs wont work one way, then turn the bulb holder around.

Also on some models the bulb behind the fuel gauge wont be seen as there is a control unit in the way, it has 3 screws, remove them and pull it up and gently leave it off to the side as its still connected, the bulb holder is behind this.

They take T10 wedge type bulbs, experiment with what you like, Autobarn has heaps of different leds to try.

By far the best I have tried are the four led per bulb type, they fit through the hole and really are very bright, alot brighter then normal bulbs.

Putting everything back in is a reversal procedure, just make sure all connectors are plugged back in securely.
And watch for the connector plate wiring where the cluster goes into, sometimes this could come out a bit and not be connected properly when you put it back in.

Thats about all I can think of for this mod, if I remember more then I will post up.

Happy modding.

I just thought, since this comes up so often maybe the mods could make this a sticky for all the newcomers?

']I see alloy dash rings? Howd you manage those?

Nah, no dash rings yet, I did the surround in a chrome finish paint and the blue lights reflect off it like a mirror, very effective.

Still waiting for the dash rings to be finished from sly.

Am looking at the needles on the dials, I reckon they could be easily dressed up a bit too.
Been looking at the audi stuff, they make nice instrument clusters, very inspirational.

For some reason when you put in the blue leds the red on the redline just does'nt show, looks normal in the daylight though.

I am painting my whole car black and installing black sheep skins etc... so it will be black/red theme... and blue guages would be mint. Id definately only want the guage cluster that colour though.

Nemesis... I'll type out whats written in the Handbook I downloaded.

-------------------------------------------
Instrument Cluster
Removal
CAUTION: THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER MUST NOT BE ALLOWED TO FACE DOWN AT ANY TIME. THE TACHO MECHANISM USED HAS A SILICONE DAMPENING DEVICE WHICH WILL LEAK.
NOTE: When removing the instrument hood, be careful not to damage the trip meter reset switch.

(1) Set the steering column height adjuster on it's west setting.
(2) Remove the two instrument hood retaining screws, refer Fig. 4 and carefully remove the hood.
(3) Remove the four instrument cluster retaining screws refer Fig. 5, and gently pull the cluster forward and out.

Installation
Install by reversing the removal procedure and make sure that all instrument cluster lights are operative and speedometer is functioning correctly... blah blah!

I made up an image of the two diagrams shown, it's attached.

hey i was wondering why the red lines on the tachos dont show???? is there a way of getting the red lines

You can use pure white leds, and the red will show, but then you get no colour on the dials.
The blue just drains the colour from the red.
I also have red in my centre console and the blue does'nt show there as well, so it works both ways.

i installed ice cool T10 globes from autobarn, rather than LEDs in my dash(too patchy? even with 5led wide angle:confused: ), thinking it would make it whiter and brighter, its a little brighter, but seems to be the same sorta color as stock globes, is there something behind the dash that needs to be removed to make it that nice crisp white?

Guyssss, does anyone know what the bulbs in the console are?
Any chance they're T5?

Cos my local autobarn doesn't stock LEDs globes, and I'm gonna have to ebay it or find one of those LED sites.
Gonna go look at repco/supa cheap/aussie auto in a sec.

Or.. The silicon sleeve things, does anyone know if they actually look any good and are bright enough, or would I have to get brighter bulbs first, then put the sleeves on them?

One more thing, I've noticed the T10 is the same bulb as the number plate lights, and I'm gonna buy some red ones for them. Are coloured number plate lights illegal?

these dont really work too well, i've tried using them;
1. If you get say a blue sleeve, and your globe has a slight yellow tinge to it, it will project green light
2. Due to the globe heating up, the sleeve will slowly fall off.
3. generally multiple sleeves are required per globe for it to project any sort of different coloured light

According to VIC rules, no car is allowed to have blue or red lights projecting from in front or behind the car; as they allegedly mimic police lights.

Hey guys, just did my cluster and number plate in red wide angle LEDs (single led) from autobarn.
Not too impressed atm.. but that might change when I go out tonight..

Thinking I might have to go for the quad LED ones (not wide angle) for the number plate..
From what I can see, they should work fine on the cluster.

And also, the bulbs that were in there look like they have the little sleeves on them already .
Blue ones, but I couldn't notice a thing when they were in there, they just looked like the normal yellow

I'll let you know how to go, those bulbs are a ripoff though.. keeping my receipt as the packets are easy to put back together :P

T5 for the clocks and such and T10 for the dash and maybe the rada map lights. Will Post up with they went and maybe sell the surplus for a Song....

Does any one know the size of the bulbs in TL air con switches, under the Power window lock Built in, and under the tippy??? T5's Work Great

Is there one I can change in the clock atop the centre console T10, and in the trip computer, they are all gunna go Edit: Built in LED

As for why the the brighter white LED's still look green not white, that's the colour of the semi transparent material letting the light through. So no matter how dim/bright the kight is the will always be green.:doubt:
Edit: This is a No Can do for a TW and prolly a TL as well, there is no Bulbs to Change in the Instrument display :(

I could also do the Air con controls by sticking the coloured transperency between the LED and and the clear plastic refractor. I had a T10 LED behind the clock but it was to bright so more transperency was put over that too.
Total cost $2.00
Its not electric blue like the Tippy, buts its blue and looks better IMO.

I am not a huge fan of LED's globes for map lights, Only because I like to use my map lights for actually reading maps and/or other text and these globes although they look good offer no real light output compared to your standard festoon/halogen bulb.
there are LED replacements with about 30 Surface LED's on them and if i could afford the $25 a gloeb I would use those, they actually give out comparable light with a standard bulb.
