hey guys, as some of you might have read in a few of my posts and threads im looking at ways to make my auto as efficient as a manual due to performance!!
i have been doing a lot of reasearch and one of the things on my list is to buy a stage 2 shift kit for my upcoming turbo converison!!
after some research while i was bored at work, i came across a very interesting article regarding manual valve bodies for auto trannys!
a lot of ppl have upgraded there autos with a shift kit and a manual valve body, and have been spanking manuals down the Q/mile, although most of these cars were older model vehicles, do the 3rd gens have an automatic valve body that i can replace with a manual valve body!!
any info would be great!!
cheers

I was under the impression that the 3rd gen auto computers couldn't have a shift kit fitted due to the 'self learning' function that they have. Unless it involves a new TCU?

Usually when you modify the valve body to a full manual stage you will have manual control over all the gears and it (the trans) WILL NOT upshift on its own,you will need to shift from a standstill in first then change the shifter to 2nd and so on till your in top gear, then you must downshift to suite also
Also, i would not think a manual valvebody will be available for electronic controlled boxes as shift kits for these are rare as rockin horse **** as it is!!!
Good luck

Yeh the shift kits are rare but can be fitted to a magna so i have been told by a few mechanics!! im still doing research into the manual valve body, and yes if one is fitted you would have to drive the auto like a manual as it wont change gears for you, which is what im after, if i can get a shift kit and a manual valve body fitted professionally ill have my manual conversion without fitting a whole new gearbox!!
its either this or keep sourcing a manual box, and atm its quite an expensive conversion compared to fitting a shift kit and manual valve body even though the auto conversion would most likely be a custom job as not much is available!!

Well I'm not too sure about the shift kit as shiftkits.com.au tried to make one but were stumped by the self learning function. see here (http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/showthread.php?t=32164#5). Therefore, if you want a shift kit you'll pretty much need to have either a custom TCU or get the chip in the current TCU replaced. That will involve an electrical engineer and someone that has a fair bit of knowledge in automotive/transmission programming. Either that or replace the transmission with one from another car, that you can get shift kits for. But that'd also be pretty expensive.

Yeh i have read that article b4 and yes your right i do need someone to do a custom job, although i have spoken to my mate who has been a mechanic for over 10 yrs and he says it can be done and i should get out of it cheaper than i would fitting a whole new gearbox,
a lot of new auto vehicles have had shift kits fitted, and some have more difficult auto systems to work out than the magnas, so if other new vehicles can have a shift kit, i dont see why a magna cant, yeh it may take a little more time and effort but if its gonna save me a couple of hundred dollars then im all for it!!
but as i said i can get the shift kit installed with some work, i just need to determine whether or not the magnas auto valve body can be replaced by a manual, im getting my mate to take a look at it in the next few days so ill see if one can be fitted, if they can im sure a lot of auto owners would be interested!!

with an Auto tranny, while u may think its manual cos ur manually changing gears a Triptronic does this anyway and its not a manual till u have a clutch. if i had a clutchless manual i wouldn't really think of it as a manual. my left foot would be WTF??
