My timing belt's being changed as we speak. Ultratune just called to say when they pulled it out it was slack. They reckon the tensioner's not holding and told me I need a new one, and pulley's and ****. All up about 700 bucks worth of bits from mitsu ontop of the service and the belt I provided.
Does this sound right to anyone? I haven't noticed any problems. Should I have? My dad's been a mechanic all his life and reckon it sounds suss. He's making a couple of phone calls now for me. Am I being ripped?
Help.....

I have heard of people replacing the tensioner as part of the timing belt change. I'd personally tell them I'm coming to inspect the tensioner before they do anything. Nothing worse than being fed crap from mechanics when they've got your car in pieces.

Yeah I think I'm gonna go down there. Shame I don't know what I'm looking at.
Isn't it a hydraulic tensioner? How do they go slack?

Yeah but who's to say they don't have old busted parts lying around?
Call me paranoid, but it's alot of money on top of what I was planning to spend.

Get your old man to put the Boxing gloves on and go down and sought em out:rant: .If he's a mechanic you should have got him to do the job, you know a freebee...

Righto, crisis somewhat averted.
I still need all the parts, but I believe them. I went for a walk down there, without telling them, and said I only lived around the corner and thought I'd pop in for a chat. They were only too happy to take me in the workshop and show me what was going on. I don't know much about the tensioner, but the mechanic explained what was wrong and it sounded reasonable. Dad agreed:D .
He said they are replacing 2 pulleys. Said he put the stethescope on them and could hear some noise in them. Fair enough.
Then the front desk guy came out and said there was one more thing he hadn't mentioned yet, and showed me my drivers side engine mount. Well bowl me over with a feather, that thing was kerplunked too. I had never noticed that, so I'm thinking it may actually have happened last night on the northern beaches cruise (thanks pete:confused: :bowrofl: ).

So anyway, yeah I'm gonna be broke for a couple of weeks. Atleast the car should feel great when I pick it up tomorrow. Better go get my tax done I think.

Shame he's in Port Augusta, SA.:P
He had their number and had his bull**** detector on standby. I told him to wait till I had been in there first. He always tells me what questions to ask and gives me enough info so I look like I know what I'm on about when I go in.
Thanks dad!

A new tensioner is about $300~$400.

When I was doing quotes for getting my timing belt done, pretty much all the mechanics said they wouldn't change it without changing a whole lot of other crap. Whether its really needed I don't know, they're just trying to save themselves from being hassled later on if something happens to the timing belt (like mine).

Anyway, it sucks to have a V6 magna, as I said to myself, i'll ever only get a new car now and sell it before any major service.

Well I've been ripped even more then!

Anyway I was in a real hurry when I did mine and I actually went for the more expensive quote for I thought I'd have a better service.

it is a hydraulic tensioner.

they don't usually stuff up. but they can leak if they are compressed too quickly and roughly when they took it out.

its hard to tell...

i mean, was the timing belt noisy before the service?

didn't think so.

were they pulleys noisy before?

O/S engine mounts are notorious to tear, especially in manuals.

dont change the pulleys at all and do the engine mount yourself dont be a fool i could take your money if you wanna spend that much:D

They've already got everything out. I don't mind paying for it. I'm too lazy and don't have the tools. Plus I like the peace of mind knowing a trained mechanic has done it, especially for big jobs.

Judging by Marty's profile, he lives in NSW.

Bingo. He's 1500km away. And, like your dad andrew, he's a bit over working on cars when it's not at work. He helps me out with things here and there when I'm home or when he comes for a visit, like brake pads and such, but other than that I'm on my own.

yeah i know what you mean, that'll be the first and last time i'll ever be going to a mechanic.

I've got my own air wrench now, so I can do almost anything :D

How many kilometers does your engine have that requires pulleys to be changed?

Must be 300k plus

the main reason the timing belt tensioner pulley, gets changed when the belt does, is though it may appear fine when changing the belt, the new belt will put extra load on the bearing in the pulley, and cause it to fail much more rapidly.
The Hydraulic tensioner should only require replacing if leaking, but these things leak a lot easier than you would expect, as alot of grime/debris gets onto the seal, and even if cleaned before you compress it, an compress it slowly, the crap quite often damages the seal causing them to leak.

but the hydraulic tensioner is there to take up the slack of the previously worn/stretched belt.

the pulley has two locators which are meant to be tensioned to 7Nm clockwise.

you only replace that when its damaged or noisy.

you are right about the hydraulic tensioner though... although i havent come across many at all.

Well ultra tune managed to get hold of a dayco timing belt kit for me (thanks to sharkie for the part no.) so I got all the parts I needed a bit cheaper.
This means I have a spare timing belt (dayco, brand new) if anyone wants to buy it.:D
