I've a 2001 Magna with the standard Radio/CD and the sound's dissapeared. When turning the unit on/off I hear a blip from the speakers, but that's about it.
I've checked:
1) CD Inseted and radio on. Tuner works ok.
2) Pulled the car apart, physically connected ok.
3) Volume not turned down, mobile phone mute not on.
4) Fiddled about with the bass/trebble...yadda..yadda. ok.
5) Checked speaker wires to speakers. Also checked speakers work by bypassing with other CD unit.
6) Code is input to the unit, okay
7) Checked 'radio' fuses both in the Engine bay and Passenger compartments.
but.....after turning the unit on, insert CD, 'CD' appears on screen for five seconds then reverts to time. Tune the radio, the frequency appears on screen for five seconds then reverts to clock.
Anyone have any idea ??????

Perhaps the laser is faulty? Upgrade time my friend... Even a cheap Pioneer headunit will do wonders for your system

Faulty laser wouldn't explain it doing it on tuner though would it?
Sounds like a fault in the power supply. Either something is shorting out or the accessory wire/power unit has gone. You should be able to pick up another standard cd player pretty cheap, try swapping them over and seeing if that helps. Though if it is the HU, i wouldn't bother replacing it with a stock item. As Tim said you're better off buying an entry level pioneer etc.

I assumed the tuner was working ok...
There isnt a security CD that is required for these perhaps.

just a note on what happens to me now and then, as it might be relavant to you sounding a little familiar...
i have a pioneer mp3 cd deck, stock speakers in my tj, now and then when im upping it a little too much, it goes completley muted, cd' still look like they are playin, tuner 'looks' like its fine, but no audio in the speakers whatso ever.
i had it installe dby strathfield, and when it played up, i took it back to them the next day, i didnt work the run to the shop, left he car there, they ring me and ask 'whats wrong with it, its fine?'..
so...
i find that it comes back after a while, personally its for me prolly a dodgey head deck, but then i had a fantasy it was some sort of cool overlaod protection, or a heat thing causing a thermal shutdown.. dpending on howmuch i annoy it, it wether comes back in an hour or so, or, exactly 2 days.. wierd.
maybe confirm that the unit isnt being over loaded or heating, or an amp playing silly buggers or a shonky connection, apart from that, i accept the ghost in the machine untill i get around to developing my hardware player.:-)

In my TJ sports this has happened just today aswell. I was playing a cd last night, got in this morning and it didnt work, I turned it off and 5-10 minutes later it worked again when I got sick of the silence and turned it back on :).
I think that the head unit was built down to a price:naughty:. Mum has an AWD sports TJ and she has had hers replaced 3 times it was under warranty so it had to be a stocky.
I would say that it is definately upgrade time. If mine does it again thats what i am doing.

I have this problem with my car aswell. Sound will cut out randomly (about once a week) and then come back randomly. Seems to happen more often when I drive during the day when its warmer.
Its definetly the deck. May aswell spend the money and upgrade to something decent.

Many thanks, even kicking it around the car park doesn't make the sound come back.
Will buy a new unit. I'd like to keep the car origional, anyone know where I'll find a bogo Radio/CD for a Magna TH ?

Ok dont go buying a new head unit. I found out what the problem is.
The wires on the rear speakers tend to touch the speaker housing causing the sound to cut out. All you need to do is move them away a bit so theres no chance of touching.
Turns out its a common problem with the 3rd gens.
