Im a little confused. Many people say that driving when the OD on the majority of the time is better for your car. I usually find it better to drive with the OD off when not driving on the freeway. Is this the best way to go about it? I find when I go up the slighest hill with OD on there is a giant clunk towards the back of the car when it kicks down to third then the engine lets rip with a massive amout of power. Any ideas?

Im pretty sure if you were meant to drive in OD all the time there wouldn't be any other option.
I know im my VN commo its a good way to kill it :( but don't ask me the technical reasons...

If you are traveling under 60km/h it should be off, like you said it's really only a gear that should be used for highway/freeway driving.

what about 80km drives that require lots of stops and starts?

turn it off when you stop lol. That would get annoying after awhile.

cars are smarter these days, thats why for example the tippys etc just have D for drive... in the manual it will tell you all about recommended speeds fot gears and o/d use... most commonly these days its recmmended to leave the stick in d, and disengage o/d for towing trailers to gngine brake down hills on freeways etc...

Yeh the 3rd gen magnas just encorperated the 4th gear into the Drive and the TCU knows when to drive in 3rd only (under 60 for my car).

Well if it helps my old verada had done 270,000kms and always had OD left on. and when the person came to look at it (new his stuff about cars) he spent a lot of time checking the gear box and changing gears for a good 5 - 10 mins on the test drive, he said best gear box he had used.

as peopel said i think they are smarter now, if the car wasn't ment to be in a gear i wouldn't be in it.

well my tf gear box doesn't know what gear it wants especially when changing from 3rd to 4th or 4th back to 3rd, it sounds stupid in the m5 tunnel i know that, car speeds up slightly then slows down then 3rd kicks in

1st and 2nd gens, especially the 4 cyl's, its best to leave it off round town and on when above 70 or so. (as m4ddog said)
The older boxes had a habit of dropping the overdrive if its used round town to much.:D

You'd better come and tell our TS that, 230k kms and always left in drive with O/D off......
