View Full Version : Wanting to upgrade TJ Speakers

In the stock 4-speaker TJ stereo system, the only mod I have done so far is to replace the head unit. I have noticed the sound quality has cleaned a fair bit, but I still think that I am lacking high-frequency response, partly because I don't have tweeters, but also because I think that the factory front door speakers are only dual-cones (if at all!) and can't reproduce the treble frequencies well, not even with my treble turned all the way up.

Similarly, while the rear 6 x 9 factory speakers sound much better with the new head unit, I reckon there is still room for improvement too.

So my question is : If I replace the front speakers with 2-way 6's (hopefully bolt straight in), will I get better treble response?

Similarly, if I replace the rear 6 x 9 's with a good pair of 6 x 9 's, will the bass and/or treble improve?

I don't really want to put an amp in if I can avoid doing it - The head unit is a Blaupunkt 50W x 4, or about 26W RMS per channel. One of the stereo shop guys told me that if I change the speakers, I have to drive them with an amp, because the head unit is not powerful enough to drive proper branded speakers, as they have a heavier magnet and need more power to drive them properly. ie. Using a head unit to power 4 non-factory speakers will make it sound worse than with the factory speakers... Is this true though...(maybe he was trying to sell me an amp??)

I'd be really interested to hear anyone's experiences if they have carried this out.
Thanks

i have the stock headunit see below thread, and i have replaced the speakers with Jaycar response 6.5" splits in the front and 6 x 9 kevlar 2 ways in the rear, and compared with stock there was a massive difference... you would find that yor head unit will be much better sounding than my set up, the stock h/u is a bit crappy...

i installed it all myself easily, for the front speakers you nees to make some new screw holes.... very easy and takes like 5 seconds..

i thougth the tj had tweeters:confused: mine does.
anyway he was trying to sell you an amp as aftermarket speakers of course will sound better then stock but not to the degree as they would if u got an amp and personaly for the extra 200$ for a little 2 channel and cable kit it would be money well spent epesiley for your treble and install it your self nice little learning cruve for you, nice little task for the weekend (few beers get a mate over learn how to install an amp fun)

Just installed a set of 6.5" Kevlar Cone Coaxial w/1" Titanium Dome Tweeter and 12dB Octave Crossovers.

The difference is amazing if not stunning compared to stock speakers. Took me one and a half hours from go to you know where, for both doors. (took my time).

Kevlars are on special at Jaycar last day today I think $109.

Easy install including cable ties for micro pc board, soldering joints and then ....... listening to cd's and mp3's that you can actually hear the words crystal clear.

Off to get a set of 6 X 9'' Kevlar's for the back, on special $129. I find they run rings around any standard speaker that's not Kevlar.

They will do my ears.

See pics

Hope this helps

Cheers

I hope you are going to heatshrink or insulate those cable joins in your pics...
They will short to each other or the car door...

Otherwise yeah they are good speakers for the price! I have installed a set in my mates car and he loves them.
