In the stock 4-speaker TJ stereo system, the only mod I have done so far is to replace the head unit. I have noticed the sound quality has cleaned a fair bit, but I still think that I am lacking high-frequency response, partly because I don't have tweeters, but also because I think that the factory front door speakers are only dual-cones (if at all!) and can't reproduce the treble frequencies well, not even with my treble turned all the way up.
Similarly, while the rear 6 x 9 factory speakers sound much better with the new head unit, I reckon there is still room for improvement too.
So my question is : If I replace the front speakers with 2-way 6's (hopefully bolt straight in), will I get better treble response?
Similarly, if I replace the rear 6 x 9 's with a good pair of 6 x 9 's, will the bass and/or treble improve?
I don't really want to put an amp in if I can avoid doing it - The head unit is a Blaupunkt 50W x 4, or about 26W RMS per channel. One of the stereo shop guys told me that if I change the speakers, I have to drive them with an amp, because the head unit is not powerful enough to drive proper branded speakers, as they have a heavier magnet and need more power to drive them properly. ie. Using a head unit to power 4 non-factory speakers will make it sound worse than with the factory speakers... Is this true though...(maybe he was trying to sell me an amp??)
I'd be really interested to hear anyone's experiences if they have carried this out.
Thanks
