look at $2000 plus at a guess
I've been getting quotes, $1200 for rebuild, $1800 for rebuild, $600-700 for changeover etc
I still have to take it in and run it through, one place I visited test drived it and said its the 'top gear" $50 to run it through the machine.
Just trying to save up before I get it done so I can get it fixed straight away, hopefully its not much..
Any idea on possible causes why the top gear would not function properly? Drive plate? solenoid? TCU? Note: all the other gears are fine - the overdrive band is screwed also, so might rule out tcu.
P.s oil is fine, nice bright red - although since the first gear went, from P to R has noticable delay/small clunk
I dont really want to spend $2000 on a new transmission which will probably be more then I could sell it for, I just want it to keep going till I can upgrade models

I was quoted in my 2.4l TE 2,500 for a rebuild.
A new one, forget that.
I ended up with one from the wreckers, it cost around 1300 from memory, and 350 for install and new fluid and filter.

My TN got quoted $770 inc GST for rebuilt/swapover with 20,000km warranty.
TR 4cyl would be the same box pretty much.
The place is just off Hoddle St on the Richmond side opposite PizzaHut outlet.

That price I would be happy with

my mates tn auto blew up a couple of months back. so we bought a $50 tn station wagon (rust holes the size of ur head) ripped the auto out and cleaned it up gave it a service and put it in his tn. the old box had 260 000klms on it and the other one had 150 000 but it still does the job. get ur hands on another box and take the weekend with the help of a couple of mates and diy.

If it's the same gear box as a first gen I have one here you can have for $50, if I can get the car started I can tell you the condition of the box, I havn't driven it yet....

yeah box *should* be interchangeable between 2nd & 1st if they're all 4cyl Astrons.
But I guess it all boils down to how much life you'd get out of the replacement unit,
its all a big lottery esepcially at this (advanced) age.
My TN shat its box at 200,056km even when it was religiously serviced every 20,000
and it even had an extra inline oil filter on its cooler pipe; 1 lady :P owner since new.

Does anyone have a decent idea when an auto box will cark it? My TE 2.4 has done 230,000k(ex RACV company car), but it's always been regularly serviced and looked after.

it could be any day at any time....
i'd start getting worried if suddenly one day the car is running really good...
my ex's car was fine one night when i was driving it.... the next day on her way to work it was all over!! without warning...

ive just been goin thru the manual and it lists 2 trannies F4A23 and F4A33 but in their wisdom they dont say what the differences are and what car they are fitted to.
The trannie isnt too hard to get in and out if you have a few tools a jack and a little mech aptitude.
Magna Buff is still yur man for advice, I can send you the relevant pages out of the manual if you need em..:D

man my transmission sucks b*lls
Quotes to get recond: $1950.00 + overdrive
$1600 Max (not sure about overdrive is included)
$1100 Min (same as above)
$1800 + overdrive
Not many of my mates are mechanics only 1 and he dsoent deal with transmissions, where I get my car done said my transmission is getting old, they adjusted the bands as best they could but it will eventually need an overhaul.
Can get one, from a TS '94 model and the TCU which I believe has had 183,000 done on it, note my current one has 300,000 on it and I dont think its been overhauled ever, just serviced.
$for about $500 delivered to my house (Trans+Tcu+freight)
If anyone is from melbourne and has the tools and the willingness to help me get this done who knows what there doing and where I can get all the parts, over a weekend or during the week, I would be happy to pay you for it and buy some beers
someone help meeeeeeeee! *dies*

From chatting around the usual joints (don't quote me), sounds like
getting Magna box recond'd is about $400+gst assuming no major broken bits;
fully installed with g'tee $700+gst driveaway.
As-is box for $500... I'd want to be pretty confident its serviceable first.
Oil flush service for my TN was usually about $140-160, which I did every 20,000km.

I've been deciding on what I want to do...... after not being able to view the box and cant 100% trust the owner and k's on it
I'm gonna get my current box reconditioned, for the $1600Max price (There an Auto Transmission place) get my overdrive fixed - and get a warranty
hopefully then wont have to worry about it for a long time
