manual, 4cyl, TS.

Sometimes going into first gear it crunches, have to go into neutral, let the clutch go and press the clutch again and into first gear, occasionally it will happen with higher gears

Do you reckon it's a clutch problem?

My '98 TF Exec manual has a similar problem; before it "warms up" if you will, it can be quite stubborn to shift into 2nd, and sometimes it gives an unhealthy crunching sound as the gear is selected.

Do you think it could be the same problem? Transmission oil?

Change your transmission oil, and make sure you flush the tramsission with one or two bottles of the stuff too, because the crunching grinds small metal shavings off the syncros into the gearbox.

Yep sounds like the syncros are on the way out, the problem will usually begin to occour when changing from 1st to 2nd. Mine did iot for ages then I finally blew 2nd gear and had to drive around from 1st to 3rd till I got a new g/box and clutch.

My TJ has done 26000 K's and does the same thing.Makes me wonder if Magna gear boxes aren't at all that flash.

Guys, go and adjust your clutch pedal. I found my clutch wasn't fully disengaging so every time I shifted any gear it was actually crunching the tiniest bit. This was only after 37000kms too. Theres a clutch stop adjustment where the cruise control sensor is, and also the rod that goes through the firewall into the master cylinder. Adjust both as far as they will go.

Wouldn't adjusting them all the way be a bad thing? like having your foot slightly pressing the clutch all the time...

This is not a problem just with Magna's, its with any manual vehicle. Changing the oil should help if you haven't done it in a while, but otherwise you may have to out up with it if you don't want the expense.

For oil depending on your model of Magna I'd recommend Penrite Manual Gear Oil 75, or 80. With older Magna's (first and second gen) manual gear oil 80 is recommended. If you use an oil stabiliser like Morey's, then you can use gear oil 75 in the first gens. The 75 is synthetically fortified whereas 80 is not, and the oil stabiliser corrects the range so it works like the 80 (if that makes sense).

Mine had Mobil in it when I bought it, and I got it serviced they put Castrol in it. I still had that problem so I changed it recently to the penrite/morey's and its only done it once! It used to do it when I put it in reverse, and now it does it much less too.

Hehehe.....120000kms ago
Changed it today, gear changes much better now, used Penrite Hypoid 80/90, 2.5 litres for $17.95.
