Hi guys,

Some one told me that prebuild subs (subs with enclosures) are not very good to put in the sedans boot because it's not going to sound very good.

Is it true ?

ummm, who told u that?

do u mean a sub in an enclouser?
I had a sealed box for my 2 12's back in the day...it was fine...

was putting out an easy 137.5db...i own a TE sedan.

Friend of mine, he said that prebuid enclosures are for the cars with open back space such as wagons and 4WD.

I dunno. I've heard a few decent (not the best I'll admit) subs in pre-made enclosures in boots of sedans. I don't know what you're mate is on about.

I built my own box for my sub and it's unreal.

sorry about the crappy quality..is this what you're talking about? If so...then you need to hear my 80 buck sub! Goes as hard as subs twice that price ;)

Also the box I have is much bigger than the required size so that will help, and it's completely airtight.

Anyway, build your own...that way you can make it to the exact shape you want....eg I built mine so it only took up the very back part of the boot...there is still heaps of usable room. And I can get to the spare tyre if need be....always a good thing.

Nothing wrong with a sealed enclosure in the boot of a sedan...good for SQ, if you want SPL, then ported is the only choice.

different subs are made for different applications,

some required sealed boxes, others ported - and there are even (apparently) subs that are made to maximise free air situation!!

anyway - a sealed box is a great way to go - just making sure that the pre-fab box is the right size for the sub - you need to check the specs of the sub to see what volume box they require to maximise potential!!

If it's the right size for that sub..then there's nothing wrong with it.

That's basically all there is to it AFAIK :)

Another question which way the sub should be turned with the face to the driver or other way arround ?

It really doesn't matter as bass is non direction, but i found mine sounded much nicer firing backwards, as in facing towards the boot rather than the driver. I placed my sub in a temp box almost everywhere in the boot to figure out the best spot to put it.

I found by putting the sub against the back of the rear seat (firing towards the driver) the bass was delayed and not as crisp.

Your subs will sound much better if you can fire them into corners rather than flat spots... If that makes any sense...

Question.

Who is using amp to run your front splits ?

Killbilly
15-04-2003, 01:11 AM
I'm using a 4x100wrms amp to run my sub and splits.

My sub is rated at 189wrms I think, can't remember...so that's bridged for the sub and the splits are 90wrms each...it was the perfect amp for the set up :)

I have two kicker IX404 4 channel amps. One is running the two subs with the 4 channels bridged into two and the other amp is running the front splits and 6x9's. Its a fantastic setup.

If I only have 2ch Amp to run Sub and no amp for spilts will I loose a lots of quality ?

Can I run 2 channel amp to power my splits ?

AussieMagna

God no. Really ou can run most splits of your deck without any problems at all. Only some need an amplifier.

Do you know if Pioneer DEH-5550MP Head Unit
MB Quart DSD216 6.5" Splits will run good without amp ?

AussieMagna

im not sure if the MB Quartz would need an amp to run or not. Youd have to ask at your local car audio store... I would say it would be able to run it.

2 words

****ing oath!!

(heres a few more words hehe)
My splits currently run from the head unit.. the DEH5550MP has 4x50watt channels.. they will run just fine in your car.

Im actually changing this over on the weekend though. I had 2 subs bridged off my 4 channel amp which im changing over to run it in 3 channel mode. 2 subs off 3 and 4 (mono) and splits off channel 1 and 2...

You dont need to buy a 4ch.. a 2 ch will suffice..

2 x 2ch can be better sometimes as you can get a higher output from them. (depending on what you buy)

AussieMagna

God yes you can buy another 2 channel. You don't need a 4 channel, they just save space...

I would try and see if the MB run well of the deck, i would assume so as my Pioneer is 50 x 4. But thats not RMS...

But if they didn't work well off the deck you could allways buy a cheap 2 channel amp... Then you would have a very nice system indeed

MB are to die for.

can 2ch amp run sub and splits ?

No, one or the other. (that is if the amp can be bridged to a single channel)

I'd always run front channels speakers off an amp too. Will give a much cleaning/louder sound that what the HU will do.

AussieMagna

You cant run speakers and subs of the same channel. If you do you'll have problems quick not to mention terrible sound

Kickers are ok.. Alot of better brands out there.. But for an entry level job they are pretty nice.

Now what you need to do is. Run your wiring, bridge channels 1 and 2 to create a 4 ohm mono for your sub to go on.. (connect + to channel 1 + and the - to channel 2 -)

Then connect your splits to channel 3 and 4..

Also check to make sure you have a HPF and LPF on that amp.. If you do. be sure to set channel 1 and 2 to LPF and channel 3 and 4 to HPF.

Kicker Amp is a very good amp.

Do you guys know where is the best place in the boot to mount it, and how to mount it?

Either on the back of the Sub box (most common) or wherever you like.. It doesnt really matter where you mount it. I know people who mount their Amps underneath the car seats.

AussieMagna
15-04-2003, 10:39 PM
Anywhere in the boot its good really, often people use a piece of wood and carpet it and mount that somewhere. or you can go all out and do a full custom enclosure like mine. Took a couple of weeks but it looks great.

Or if your building your sub box, make room to bolt it onto that like killbillys. Otherwise under the seat is fine. I mounted my kicker amps under the seat in my old TS but kicker amps get quite hot so my car use to warm up a fair bit...

Bain you have DEH-5550MP HU, tell me did you try to install it without an face bracket, so that HU kinda sits inside your panel, without sticking out?

How does it look better outside like that:

http://members.optusnet.com.au/miltonf/car/headunit.jpg

Or inside the pannel ?

It sits out at the moment

If you use it without the little bracket.. Youll have an edge around the Headunit which you can see into .. Its only about 1mm, but to me its very noticable and looks unprofessional

So i mounted it with the bracket. What i will be doing is ordering a panel (like the one below it) and then cutting it up so that the face sits flush with no gaps whatsoever.

I dont mind it sitting out. But i prefer it to sit flush with the rest of the console to give it that smoother look.

If you want to see the difference and can wait till Thursday afternoon, ill pull it out and mount it flush without the panel.. (takes about 10 mins to pull it all out)

Maybe you can give me more info on where to order that panel.

Any Mitsu dealer should beable to help you out with one. Just head to their service department.

*edit* the cost is around 40$ depending on your model of car.

I had the same problem when I had a Panasonic HU in the car! I tried to sit it back but it looked worse than sticking out!

I now have an Alpine unit which sits a little better :)
