I wish to put a 10" Kicker sub in my parcel shelf. Now I can make a mounting block and all sorts of things to make it go in... however, this is not a free air specific sub. Just a normal sub, meant for enclosure. What problems will I experience, will I have to make a custom enclosure to go on the top of the trunk to cover it up, or will she just go?

lol you prob don't wanna hear this but why?
To make it work properly you'd have to mount it into the shelf, which is quite illegal.
If you were to make an enclosure, it would then need to sit on top of the parcel shelf, which would look kinda silly...

Lol, because I'm getting this for next to nothing, so I want to use it. I'd rather have two 12's in the boot.

I don't have to do it on parcel shelf. I can make a MDF block that sits between subhole and parcel shelf cover. And besides, Sharkie has done it, and I like it lol

As far as my research goes, I may have to make an enclosure sitting on the roof of the boot. I'm looking to get some ideas, so Sharkie, maybe you can share your wisdom ;)

if you make a small enclosure for it under the parcel shelf i wouldnt see it to be a problem :).
as long as its fixed in right and supported the right way you shouldnt have a problem

Is there a hole cutout already in the parcel shelf? I didn't think there was?

Yeah there is mate. I have a 97 TF, from what I can tell, some had the hole cut out, and others didn't. But yeah I already have the hole to use, I need to space it with some panel so the 10" fits in, then its all about enclosing it I'd say.

not quite sure if there is a whole cut out there, but it looks like theres a whole in the parcel shelf where they have welded a piece of metal over to cover up a whole. dont c y its not possible to cut out that whole and use it for a sub

Nah there is a specific hole. There are four screws holding in a plate which covers it.

there is actually a spot to place a sub on the parcel shelf. some magnas have them and others dont. mine does :D, you can tell by looking in the boot under the parcel shelf and there should be a circle unsure on the diameter but it sit in abit.

It has an 8 inch diameter, but if I put in a spacer, I can have it so I can a 10"

Oh well in that case you can just make a spacer out of MDF like you said, too easy :). Hmmm i haven't noticed a hole in mine :(.

Hahaha unlucky mate... though have a good look for it but, you'll know exactly what it is if you see it.

I'm really not keen on the enclosure idea though :doubt: Sounds like it will take heaps of work! And free air subs aren't cheap!

Shouldn't be that hard, just drill holes through the parcel shelf into the wooden box and mount it to the bottom of the parcel shelf, of even just make that whole section a box that goes between the struts.

Post pics when its done :D

When i had my VB commie, i had 2x 10" 250W rms subs in my rear dash. I threw the old shelf out and replaced it with 15mm MDF and put nice carpet over it. man, i did some crazy **** in that car.

I cut the living hell out of the metal to make them speakers fit. Sounded good though.

Don't worry I'll post em up!

I may have to hit up my mate at Autobarn, see if he can make me a custom box, so it doesn't become too big in the boot :D

Excuse my ignorance...why is the installation of a sub in the parcel shelf illigal?? I was thinking of doingit too.

cause i dont think your allowed to start cutting up your rear parcel shelf unless it comes with one from factory, but i may be wrong

yeah its illegal to cut ur parcel shelf becuase it "comprimises structural ingrety in the case of a rear end collosin"...

I always thought its because a sub can blow your rear window out. I cant remember who told me this

It's only illegal if there's no pre-cut hole there. You cannot cut ANY part of metal that's part of the structure of your vehicle because it compromises the structural integrity (as said above by solarakid).
However it appears that some 3rd gen owners indeed did have a hole precut. so if this is in fact the case, it is not illegal.
But the main thing i'd be worried about is the major rattle you're going to get. The parcel shelf is pretty thin and my 6x9's are only running midbass and it rattles.

Haha i don't think you could fit a sub big and powerful enough into the parcel shelf that could blow the window out. The parcel shelf will probably rattle loose before the window

you COULD reinforce the metal with some sound deadining and maybe some more wood that might minimise the rattle?

3rd gens have a metal parcel shelf and that's it, no wood. Sure you could prob spend alot of money re-enforcing the parcel shelf, but it'd be alot easier just to mount a small box behind the ski port,

Sub box is way easier. Just do that.... :D
