I've installed a Blaupunkt CD/MP3 head unit, as well as upgraded the 4 speakers in the TJ with (matching) Blaupunkt 6-inch 2-ways in the front doors, and 6x9's in the rear. Clarity is OK, but......

Bass response is still lacking, in my opinion. It's OK when you're stationary, but once you're doing 70km/h or over, the bass seems to disappear. And TJ's aren't noisy cars either! My gut feeling is that the Blaupunkt head unit is unable to boost the bass frequencies sufficiently. I remember putting a Sony Xplod head unit in an '85 Corona, retaining its stock 20-year old speakers, and it sounded better than my current setup.

Is anyone able to verify that different brands of head units yield different types of sound and quality, even though they may all be popular brands?

wether thier a poular brand or not has nothing to do with the sound, as its something thats totally personal, what sounds good to some one may sound totally **** to another, as for me, i wouldnt touch blaupunkt with a very long stick, but any way, to answer your questions, yes, they do yield different sound and quality.....duh

I wouldn't touch that stuff with a 40 foot pole.

Best bang for buch is the cheap Pioneer stuff, looks okay, well known, sounds okay and the price is about right to.

umm....u ever used any Blaupunkt stuff??

Well, my frist amp was a 4ch blaupunkt one that had a light-up blue window. Its hard to say whether a brand is good or not, because each brand has a big product range and each brand is better at making a specific product.

I've always liked Blaupunkt head units though..installed 1 in a mates car..it was nice.. the other thing are the amps. Not a fan of the plasticy new stuff, but the Burning Desire series. BD1 and the burning desire 2. I was going to buy one of them, but i wanted 2 at a time and there was only one available :( oh well.

Blaupunkt is good.

Blaupunkt are made in Malaysia and are std issue audio equipment for the Malaysian made Protons. From what i hear they're good value for money.

Standard in the VE Commodore now too. In my experience their cheap stuff is nasty, and they don't really make any good gear.

Blaupunkt is very popular in germany. Almost as much as pioneer here. They make decent stuff and also not so decent. Just like brands such as pioneer and sony. Spend little $$ and you get something cheap and nasty. Spend big $$ and you get something decent.

Blaupunkt just isn't popular here in australia. Which isn't surprising as the australian market is way behind the rest of the world anyways.

nothing wrong with Blau gear. their cheaper stuff is average, not much of a difference between 1 brand and another down there. but getting into their higher grade stuff, like their Burning Desire II amps and top model head units, they a a bloody good brand.. their decks get used in award winning SQ systems, and their amps in SPL systems.

with that said, i'd prolly go for another brand unless i had the blau gear offered to me cheap cheap, but you may love em, i say go for blau :D

sseee, exactly what i said. The brand is german, (Supposed to be german for 'blue dot' or something lol) but not made there...Hell, who owns a piece of audio equipment that ISN'T made somewhere on the pacific rim? in an asian country?

I have a blaupunkt MP3 head unit and it is brilliant, funny thing is I think it is too bassy.

In fact all who have been in my car comment on how good the sound is.

So maybe you have'nt set it up right? dunno.

What's the Head Unit model?

I've got a Blaupunkt Acaulupo mp3 head unit running eclipse 6.5 splits at front and eclipse 6x9 at the rear and it sounds really nice.
I understand though about the bass when you get up to speed a bit. But this happens in most cars when travelling at speed. Maybe some sound insulation would help.

Blaupunkt IMO have two sides. The cheap nasty stuff and the good upper end stuff. This is why there is a vigorous debate on wheather blaupunkt is good or bad.

IMO......the upper end stuff is pretty spot on.

Hi, my head unit model is the Blaupunkt Key West MP36 - single DIN CD/MP3.

I've got Blaupunkt 6.5" 2-ways in the front doors, and Blaupunkt 6x9's in the rear shelf.

Yes, like I mentioned in my original post, treble is fine, clarity is fine, but bass just doesn't seem to carry, like with a Pioneer head unit - My parents have an old Benz with a 1999-model Pioneer CD head unit, and it sounds way better than my current Blaupunkt setup.

So the more I think of it, the more I am led to believe that the 'tunability' of the head unit - that is, how you can tweak the bass/treble/loudness settings etc. can greatly affect the overall sound that you get. -- would you guys agree?

Yeah I would totally agree with you.
It took me a while to get the head unit settings to my liking but once sorted out it should be fine. I still have a tinker here and there depending on the music i'm listening to.

I don't know if yours has it but along with the normal "bass, treble, fader, balance setting" i've got a x-bass function that pumps up the bass (3 levels)

I also have the option on my head unit to customise the settings by ajusting the Gain on these filters:
Sub Low EQ - 32-50Hz
Low EQ - 63-250Hz
Mid EQ - 315-1250Hz
Mid High EQ - 1600 - 6300Hz
High EQ - 8000 - 12500Hz

Good Luck!

Yes, I've played with the EQ and X-Bass settings no end, but the sound in my opinion lacks punch.

I went to listen to a Pioneer head unit (also rated 50W x 4), no amps, no subs, just the head unit running 6's and 6x9's, and it sounded much better than my Blaupunkt 50Wx4 running an identical speaker setup.

The Pioneer was much crisper in the high frequencies, with a lot more dynamic bass. The sound was just a lot fuller.

Looks like a head unit swap may be on the way!

Interesting note:

Key West - 4 X 18w RMS (4 X 50w Output)
Acualupo - 4 X 25w RMS (4 X 50w Output)

This RMS output could be the difference of sound quality.
A higher RMS output is what you should look at. I wonder what the Pioneers RMS rating is?

hmmmmm underpowered speakers i say.. run the speakers off an amp, i think youll find theyll sound a lot better..

Yep agree...amp them up or get a more higher power head unit. (RMS that is)

Whatever feels right!

I have Blaupunkt Overdrive 70WRMS splits up the front running off a 50w Boss head unit, they go alright, no complaints.
