Not wanting to spend more than $800 on a new sub, which would be the best choice out of the following?
My main aims being deep, powerful bass - as opposed to punchy bass - as well as good SPL qualities.

Kicker Solobaric L7
Hertz ML3800 (http://www.hertzaudiovideo.com/Doc/pdf_ml3800.pdf)
Digital Designs DD3512d (http://www.ddaudio.com/dd/caraudio/woofers.asp?series=3500d) (only exception to price limit)
Vibe AC 12 (http://www.vibeaudio.co.uk/index.asp?page=p-ac.html&header=p-ac-h.html)
Boston G512 (http://www.bostonacoustics.com/car/car_product.aspx?category_id=17&family_id=106&product_id=300)
Crossfire XT212 (http://www.crossfirecaraudio.com/prodInfo.asp?IDProduct=194)
Oz Audio Me12 (http://www.ozaudio.com/oz/oz_me12.htm)

Feel free to suggest others if you feel something else would be better suited.

Kicker Solobaric L7 - good contender.. you could get 2 for $800 if you haggle
Hertz ML3800 - opposite of what you want.. not loud, nice, tight and crisp
Digital Designs DD3512d (only exception to price limit) - doable for $800, and ideal if youve got a lot of power
Vibe AC 12 - hot sub from what ive heard.. but better can be had it seems
Boston G512 - can certainly go low and boomy, as well as be punchy.
Crossfire XT212 - Loud subs, also pretty ideal for you
Oz Audio Me12 - more punchy/sq oriented, but they are still very good subs for what you want. loud off not much power too.

when it comes down to it, being 'boomy' and loud comes down to your enclosure more than anything. i just sold my Resonant Engineering SX 15", and that do whatever the hell you want it to really :D but wasnt quite fast enough for me.

my personal choise in that lot would be 2 L7's. you can give em low power, high power, small enclosure, huge enclosure, whatever, they are very adaptable subs, and proven. seconded by the Boston G5.

hope that helps,
Damon

i like the newest clarion 15" pxw1552 they have a fair bit of boom, 1500w peak 750w rms, and there only about $299 each, then i would throw a 5000w orion amp at them,

just my 2cents worth :D

Thats all secondary to me, once I choose the sub, finding what I'll need to power it and the rest will follow closely behind; though any help/suggestions would not go astray.

Good point, I've had a look around at some other dealers and it appears I might not be going to JB for that one hehe. Though the one at JB does come in a vented enclosure, its more in the $600 region.
Maybe I've found my choice - it'll be easier on the back pocket and it'll mean I can spend more on ampage and some Hertz splits lol

hertz splits  nice choice

i will let you in on a secret, there is a t-bird getting built that is running over 35k of hertz equipment including one of the prestige hertz hand made amp's ( the only amp that is australia) oh yeah and the car is being built in queensland, once complete it will grace the covers of a few mags,

p.s. it's getting ghost flames painted on it at the moment and the engine is in ready to have the fuel lines made up,

My recommendation is 1 x ID Max 12". I've heard most of the subs in question and the ID blows them all away for SQ. For SPL the DD 3512d, but you need power as well.

besides that and other subs i've recommended, Earthquake Magma's play very low and take a beating.

DD subs on the other hand don't play very low and suit ported boxes. They peak much higher and are designed for high db output not low frequencies. Personally I like my subs to play very low for SQ. By that Im talking about rumble over punch... (I have mine lowpassed around 50 hz and below) Most DD subs have ports tuned to around 40 hz so arent that good for straight SQ. I tried and am much happier with the Phoenix Gold Xmaxs now.

Most people buy their subs without truly listening to them. Ignore what people say and dont buy what is 'cool' as audio shouldnt be about that. Use your ears.

If you want subs that play low, then you'll usually need a sub suited to a small sealed enclosure.

Peace

Tim

I've had a read and I'm really impressed by the low frequencies that the sub is able to achieve - which is far below the others - and after reading some reviews and people actually comparing them against JL W7's, I'm realising how important doing your homework is hehehe.
With the ID MAX however, what would you recommend for an enclosure?

Greetings All.

Im running a Treo Engineering TSX 12.22...

Though i think it needs a little more power to get working...only rated at 400wrms, and im already putting 660wrms through it with a Audison LRx2.500 bridged...

IDMAX need medium to big sealed boxes, most sit in a 50-65litre sealed enclosure ( for the 12inch ).

I can give points to the G5, never fails to rock your socks off. So dam low that people always think I have 2x 12's or a 15inch. :D

Hertz HXS series might tickle your fancy, very very loud and sound not to bad either. The 12inch goes for around $450 and the 15inch goes for around $600. They are rated at 900 and 1000WRMS respectively.

Have you got a link to the Hertz HXS? My fancy has been tickled.

Hey champ,

For the specs etc go to www.rmaudio.com.au and look around at the manuals and under Hertz and you will find both subs there.

I tested the HXS 12inch and dam it was loud for only 600WRMS, has 100db sensitivity  Lots of excursion as well.

I went to AutoBarn with the TAFE boys today, and while I was there I saw they had some new Clarion stuff going for quite cheap (considering what they are). The subs caught my eye - being as thats mainly what I'm looking for, but also because its the PXW1552 (http://www.clarion.com/au/en/products/2006/audio/subwoofers/PXW1552/au-en-product-pf_1139306870520.html) and was only around $200!

What do you guys think of these subs?

::EDIT::

Specs are here (http://www.clarion.com/au/en/files/pdf/catalogue/2006/09Specifications&Descriptions.pdf) in pdf format.

Those subs will be cheaper but you will notice the difference. In the end you would probably not want bass songs to come on. However have a listen and see if you like it, I bought a Clarion because it was the loudest at the time under $190.

When my tastes changed I went with a Boston Pro 12.5lf then a G5 :D

Joel says get the Hertx HXS.... 2x 12" if you can afford them, else the single 15.

Give it lots of power.. the 15" is rated 1kW or 1.2kW.... but you can happily feed them with much much more.
