View Full Version : My eventful evening...

So anyway... I got home, had nothing to do.

Malcolm was bowling, Lee and Dan were not driving around for once... so I figured I would waste my time at home...

Then it dawned on me... I would make a box for my 2x 12" subs...

Now firstly lets clarify something... I cant afford to get a professionally made box yet, heck I cant even afford to go down to bunnings and buy some MDF for a semi-decent self attempt. All materials seen in the pictures were found in the corner of the garage.

The only thing I measured was the holes for the subs using the templates... everything else is pretty much guessed lengths and dimensions.

No glue was used, only about 50 or 60 self-tapping screws... yet the thing is surprisingly stable.

My guesswork was just that... I decided it would be 300mm.. just coz :p

When it was done and I proceeded to fit it in the car it only JUST fit... the subs were meant to be vertical, but that didnt fit, so now they are horizontal 8)

Total time taken: 3 hours.

Cost: $0 (Just the way you want it  )

Just a small update, I spent an hour back in the garage today and shortened the box by 80mm so it is now only 220mm deep.

Looks and fits better ;)

Good work man!

Do yourself a favour though...

Save some dosh...get some 18mm MDF and then use those bits as template.

Then you'll have a great sub box :D

Oh no, when the time comes I will be having a fully decked out, neoned, perspexed, professionally made box.

The jobs been quoted at $350... but it has lots of angles and corners so thats no surprise.

You'll find that with no glue/silicone sealant you may suffer from leaks or whistling sounds in the box. When you build a box you should really be using PVA woodworking glue, as the glue is what ultimately holds the box together; the screws really only hold the sides in place whilst the glue dries and don't do too much structurally!

As for a ghetto-box for $0 it serves the purpose though =)

And use silicone around the corners to ensure an airtight seal

liquid nails, silicone PVA glue - anything like this will serve the purpose and a sealed box will work infinitely better than an unselade one - unless it is properly ported.
