Hey Everyone,

Question 1:

I have a 91 TR SE 2.4L Auto. under normal acceleration between 95-105 I get a surge or pop like the engine is starving. When going hard it is fine but just under normal acceleraion it does it at random. I am not a very technical person but could it be the fuel filter or fuel pump? any ideas would be great?

Also:
- ecu/efi chip replaced 6 months ago.
- tcu controlling idling etc replace 12 months ago.
- Welsh Plugs Done 12 months ago.
- 170,000 Km's on the clock.

Question 2:

Another quick question. Just to clarify something. Due to the airflow controller being at the end of the air intake you have to have a non standard pod filter that doesn't swirl the air on the air intake? If you have a standard pod filter on it will this damage the car?

cheers,

-Rossco

Yes having the air flow meter you should not be using a universal pod filter as this can cause running lean or running rich issues which may or may not be your problem, not sure if you are running one or not.

Could also be your O2 sensor mucking aroundin cruise mode.

Hmmm Yeah i have a pod filter on it. I was told it was okay but after reading some of the forum post I was unsure. The thing is i have had to pod on for a few months and have not had the problem until this week. It gets reasonable mileage and goes a bit harder. I had the same problem before the ECU fried itself (no pod installed at the time). After the new ECU it was running fine until now. I will take the pod off and give it a run and see what happens.

i hiad a similar problem in the tr but it seemed to be a throttle position sensor problem because when i removed the sensor it worked fine :) , ey mitsiman what will removing the tps cable do in the long run ?

The TPS is the primary source for the computer to know whether its on or off idle.

Removing it wuold probably tell he car its at idle all the time and run it leaner. NOt recomended.

Could be your TPS playing up and the pod filer, whilst not the correct one may have been on there long enough to damage the cat converter maybe.

I would suggest remove it first, then get a MUT sensor check by Mitsubishi and see what errors the computer has.

my oldmans old car was doing something similar to what u describe, ended up being Spark Plug leads..

Well I have changed back to stock filter and it is still a bit hesitant between 95-100 but has not surged yet. But I haven't been for a long drive yet so hopefully it will not surge again :? . Its nearly due for a service so I will get it checked out then.

Planned Upgrades (now that i have a Job  ):

- cat and exhaust
- spark leads
- K&N Pod Filter (anti swirl :D )
