Best you do a search on the CAI.
The diff whines I have heard, or what people were trying to point out to me was like a drone..... Then again, I am not the best at this, as I am not sure if that was the noise, however if you ask a mitsu dealer they will take it for a drive and be able to tell you.

When does it whine? At what speed?
My KJ AWD rear diff whines just a little over 120km/h while accelerating and not cruising. Doesnt bother me. Would say it is totally normal.
At least its not like a Ford diff that whines at any speed and is usually louder than the motor.

I second that.

A diff lets your wheels turn at different speeds ( a differential) because if they didn't when you turned a corner one wheel would spin because it's not traveling as far....
A dyno is used to measure the power your car can put out.

I replaced the rear and centre differential oil with Redline lightweight shockproof oil and..
It seems to work well - less noise and vibration from the driveline under acceleration; which is a common issue in the awd's. so perhaps try that ..

Yeah thats the only let down from the AWD's well the ones i have driven anyway. Driveline vibration under hard acceleration. Feels a bit like an old VR commy or something.
Its fine under light acceleration, just a little shudder when going hard.
As for the whine, totally normal. Depends what speed and also if you are acclelrating or deaccelerating. Its only a quiet whine. Sounds cool i recon.

I don't get any driveline vibration when accelerating at all, even with hard acceleration. I
also don't have any diff noise, at least not that I can hear inside the cabin.

yeah me either, mines done 100k.... i have felt the vibration but not all the time... and i alaways give it a bit..... maybe i cant hear the whine cos of the 200db exhaust drone i have lol... whines are cool though, i love the 4spd auto falc trans whine...
whine is cool
backlash is not!

My '04 TL VRX AWD is making a whining sound which I thought may be the rear diff. But the dealer says that it is the tyres (original Grid something or other), and that they are "cupped". Only done ~30k.
So, for me, good news - diff should be ok, but, bad news - tyres are making a loud whining noise.
The dealer reckons that I need to talk to the tyre company about the tyres, I'm thinking that Mitsubishi should think about the equipment it installs on their cars and take responsibility for it. I'll have to take to MMAL about it.

Cupped tyres cause thumping and/or whining sounds. I think one of my tyres is doing that.
Cupping can be caused by extreme lack of rotation or weak suspension.

I let the dealer handle the rotation of the tyres during normal servicing. The suspension is stock VRX. The Grid's are a directional tyre, so I can really only swap them front to back, and the dealer reckons that they will make even more noise if they are moved from the back to the front. So it looks like the rotation will have to stop until they're worn out, or I'll have to endure noise from the front in the hope that they will wear down and quieten. Neither is an attractive option.
The dealer has also seen this on another AWD.
How often do you rotate your tyres Vlad?

I only rotated once at 15000kms. I know, its bad. Should have rotated it at no more than
10000km. I'm in the process of changing mine. The GIIs have lasted 22000kms, could have
been 30000 if I rotated them more often.
I never noticed the thumping/whining noise until after the rotation and yes its the front
ones now that are making that noise.

I was hoping for more than 30,000km out of the tyres! Is this sort of milage normal for these tyres? I'm hoping for something like 50,000km.

Really depends on how you drive and how often you rotate them, balance, align etc. Get
the GIIIs. They are newer and better than the GIIs.
