View Full Version : Radiator hoses replaced by pipes
I don't know if anyone reads some "tuning" magazines but something I've noticed and like is the replacement of radiator hoses to what looks to be possibly polished (i'd guess stainless) mandel bent pipes. I rekon this idea is good for 2 things. 1) looks hot, 2) will never blow.
Any idea's why this would be a bad thing to do?

waste of money, thats about it reallly, but if u want em, go for it.
mandrel bent piping like that would be expensive.

Would look pretty cool! Let us know how much it would cost if you get some quotes...

This one looks tight - albeit a 2JZ, but its exactly what I'm talking about. Adds some shine to an otherwise engine bay like ours that we can't have shiney 'cooler piping and stuff. I've seen this in a few mags on cars that are supposed to be hardcore race cars so if they are indeed hardcore then you could consider this a performance mod not just for looks :P
And YES I KNOW its a waste of money.. well when you think about it if you never blow a radiator hose you could be saving money, time and maybe even your health (getting out on the side of the highway in the middle of no-where and dieing because you won't drive your car with no water) its not a bad idea anyway.
From what I remember asking about getting other stuff made up this would be under $100 per hose which is pretty steep but the most expensive but would be the silicon joiners (well for size vs money they would be) and mandrel bending isn't that expensive, just depends on who you use to get it done!
The bends he has there looks tighter than the bends I'd need anyway, had a look last night, I don't even need 90 degree bends, a couple of 50-60's. I think the problem would mostly be getting stainless that size, Aluminium would oxidize so it'd go to **** pretty fast.

It can still blow, the section where it connects to the radiator and the motor has to be a hose to allow for engine movement. So there is still the chance, they will be the weakest points of the whole thing.
Sounds like a complete waste of money to me.

You are adding more metal to your coolant path... Electrolytic corrosion also needs to be considered. Especially if you are using welded metal with a dissimilar filler.

id rather a hose blow up then the radiator blow out.. Looks gay.. and will hold the heat from the water in..

u could get those braided hose cover thingos if u want some bling in ur bay
saw them at repco for like $40 a set or something
Altho i cant really see the point, unless u have a show car how often do ppl look in ur engine bay?

Here's some other ideas...
(See pics below)
1. These were recently on ebay. They are a flexable hose made from Stainless Steel (Chromed). They could be cut using a hacksaw to length and had an inside size of 45-50mm. They sold for around $100.
2. Full Silicone hoses.
3. Braided lines - engine dress up kit sleaves - anyone ever used these?

You'd worry about it only if the hose/s were in the way of a dump pipe or supercharger shaft. Even then the 1st gen radiator hoses and a top feed thermo housing will get enuf clearance for these.

Heat from the water, its uhh rubber which will hold in heat too?!!?
How will a radiator blow out from having a sold pipe? you'd have to add more water to make it blow like a balloon, and there's the over-flow tank when your coolant heats up and needs to be released.
Those braided sleeve kits look like supercheap auto braided sleeve kits..
Those "hardcore" silicon radiator hoses don't come for magnas.
The only person that has come up with good input is KB (Although I'd use good qual silicon hose to join it to the radiator and engine so it'd be a weak spot but one tough weak spot) and heath young.
I feel a bit let down guys - i want to do something different and all i get is intelligent comments like "it's gay" or "complete waste of money".. **** isn't everything a complete waste of money? Why buy a car when its only going to die one day? why mod a car when your only ruining parts that you'll have to replace by USING those go fast parts you put on in the first place? Why do anything at all? BECAUSE I WANT TO AND I WOULD LIKE SOME VALID RESPONCE. You don't say stupid comments like that when someone turbo's a family car like a magna that has **** weight distro, power and prowess.
Jeez.
I think you're all jealous that I am the first who wants to do this and none of you thought of it first!

Settle petal.
I like those silicone ones, personally I would like to put the smaller version silicone piping all around my engine bay but they are expensive.
The solid pipes would look really good if they were polished.
I have used those braided lines before on my 4cyl and they look alright for the money, but the ends are hard to make look right, as they just slide over your existing pipes.
Yeah I would go for it, but I am like you, spend lots a money on my car just because I like it.
Plenty of people think modders are mad but if its your thang then go for it.
I would use coloured sleaves for the end of the solid piping in a similar colour to your car, will give it a uniform look.
You could also get a few bits and pieces chromed around the engine bay to set it off, and anything plastic under there can be easily sprayed up another colour as well, just make sure you prepare it first and use plastic primer.

I think people just want to throw everything at you so that you can weigh up the benefits and requirement of the components you're considering esp in light of Heath's input. Just allow enuf flex in the system to compensate for engine movement esp if an engine mount is torn - can limp home with a dead mount but not with a green blood haemorage.
You can also coat the inside of the pipe with Por15. Google it, I'm using it in the inlet manifold prototype. You can also use the Por15 Glisen PC to coat it once you've polished it up. I agree that the Magna engine bay looks sh!thouse, so do it. You could also use that alloy finish spray paint on the radiator hose and see how that holds up before busting out the folding for mandrel piping. But if you're still keen on the mandrel set, I'll make it for you if you'd like me to price the job next wk. PM if that interests you.
