Well folks i have another question. Candy paint, how many coats does this stuff take, does it fade alot quicker than say a metallic paint and how much would it cost for a full respray in candy?

from what i know about watching the High Octane series is candy paint is a layer of a metallic type base with a colored kinda like clear coat.

my guess is high quality paint would be needed for this so you are looking at a high figure.

i personally never had a car properly painted (Cruddy backyard job) but you will have to see when the other members jump into this thread.

k with candy paint u first put down ya primer (3-5 coats depending on thickness) 2 coats of base colour (a flat colour) 2 coats of candy colour (opaque layer) and 3-4 coats of top coat.

for a full respray i would normally charge around 3.2k+ (depending on the car and the cost of paint they want)

is it true that with candy paints if u scratch ur paint or need something touching up the whole panel needs to be painted?

depends on the scratch if its just through the top couple of layers of clear then u just touch up the clear if its all the way through to the base coat then u do

candy spray jobs include alot of work. (work=hours=$$$). the number of coats needed depends on the colour chosen. If there is old damage then there is repair work first, then hifill(primer/filler), then base colour(2-4 coats), then tinting colour(anywhere from 2-? coats depending on desired finish), then some clear would be good(2-3 coats), for a show finish the clear should then be cut back and recleared(called flow-coating). if done properly can look awesome, if done badly could cost alot to redo. I think everyone has seen a bad(read:budget) candy job at some time. if damaged it will normally be necessary to repaint the damaged panel and some times even the entire car (dont even want to think what that would cost.). for an everyday car a nice pearl/metallic colour is a much better option. last time a candy was done at my work it cost 10 grand took 8 hours booth time, but was a show car finish. how much $ do you want to spend?

Note Pete said it was Materials Only, hence the $900 price. He said his mate works at the panel shop. I have a mate with a respray that cost him nothing but got top 60 at Summernats, he is a Panel beater by trade like me and had the paint done at his work by his boss, for free. The job may have cost nothing, but for any customer to walk in off the street it would be well over $10,000. Do you see the difference?

Worse still are jobs done by back yard tradesman who front as actual licenced tradesman.
