View Full Version : Magnas getting increased street cred

Since I purchased my magna about 1 year ago i've noticed that they are not considered as lame as they may of been in the past. I see more 20yo types driving around in magnas with the standard dropped, bling wheels, paint job look all the time. You can now even use your magna to impress 17yo girls lol
I also noticed that there are a couple doing formal runs for college and highscool students (they are seperate in ACT). Which are normally reserved for the classiest or fully sickest rides out there.
Dunno if this topic has been covered before but wanted to see what people think.

i reckon you see more young ppl driving magnas now a days coz there such great value for moeny, thats wat drew me towards the magna... wat other well built car this side of 10 years can u find with only 100,000km's, airbag, a/c, p/s for a mer 7k drive away? not many ill tell ya that...
and they also make sweet cruisiers.... hence the standard mods of rims, lowering and sound system...

Yeah i agree especially over the last year i have seen a lot more modded magnas. But you still get the occasional person that laughs when you say that your spending money a magna. But generally now i only get good feedback on it.

yeah thats what reeled me in compared to a commodore and falcon, its cheap alot more refined and better ride quality by far.. just good value for money and aye they dont look that bad either. Perfect first car if you ask me!

i did took 2 people to a formal last year.. i was surprised that they asked me to take them.. i mean its only a magna..
ive noticed a lot of ex-rental ones that mitsu dealers buy back getting about with 17's, lowered, spoiler, tint.. i mean $14-$17k for a car thats got power everything (seat, windows, mirrors) cd player, climate control air cond, 4 airbags etc with about 30,000kms on it is ****ing good value..
one person i know looked at one (a red TL) and said nope, yuk.. the dealer had the windows tinted, 17's, lowered and a spoiler put on the back (all for under 2k) and it looked awesome.. they signed the deal that afternoon..
so for 14-17k plus another 2k, you've got yourself a car with plenty of power (yet economical), loads and loads of features and it looks good.. i personally dont think you can go wrong..

well i can't deny it
the magnas: are comfy very good cruiser, enough space for mates, they look better then a holden or ford gen2 up to the model before the huge dog ugly facelift gen3, look even better with the right rims, ample boot space to have a good sound system and still have space for some cargo
thy still lack a couple of things: power/torque from 1000 -3000 rpm, the diffcultly in tinkering with the engin ( but then again they weren't made for that'

Indeed, as a 23yo, I've lusted over the typical ricer & wog rides (no, I'm not being racist!), however, for an all round practical, affordable, and very nice looking ride (I'm one of the rare breeds that actually likes the look of the TL-TW's), you can't beat the second hand/near new beauty of a Magna. I'm hoping the 380 continues with the tradition of great second hand value.
Incidently, I think the comment re 'ample boot space' is quite an understatement. I wouldn't be surprised if there was at least 1.5 to 2 times the boot space in a Magna, than there is in a Commodore - the trade off being interior space is slightly cramped in the rear.
I've owned a 2nd gen Magna, and wasn't overly fussed on it (it was an 'A to B' car), but I've loved driving my Series II TW so much, I practically think up any excuse to drive it.

I wanted a rex and when i couldnt find one Magna was next choice, so you know i think there pretty damn good! :D
This might sound kinda silly but the main reason i got one over a Falcadore is because it has no window sills (THEY PISS ME OFF) lol

im a wog! and my magna is a fully sick wog mobile lol.... sick system dvd's subs dumped 20's white walls, lol...
man ppl are turning, every where i've taken it to be worked on, they are like wow man, and thinking about getting one....
yeah and the framless doors..... everyone loves those... the low seating position, and the turbo and bov off sound when it's cold.... siiiiick...
seriously atm i would be able to sell more ppl TJ's than mitsu could sell 380's....
no where are those young girlies.... lol

Myself and 6 others entered our cars into Newcastle Autosalon and almost the entire weekend we got great feedback about how tidy the cars were and that people now wanted to do theirs up after seeing ours.
My sister and her best friend came to me and asked if I could drive them to their year10 formal in the magna and back then all it had was mags and a very clean paint job.
I'm waiting to see which car she's gonna want next year as I'll have my magna which is now lowered bodykit exhaust etc or my 74 beetle which will be finished in white with a blue pearl over the top early to mid next year in time for her year 12 formal.

It has become a bit of a plague around my local area, my car used to be so unique, and now there is another one the exact same colour as mine dumped with rims and exhuast and tint cruising my area.
And they are poping up all over the place.
Ah well, it had to happen sooner or later as they are good value cars with plenty of punch, especially the manual versions.
Hahaha, an absolute classic, my good friend bought a HSV SV6000, one of only 50 in Australia, and my neighbors kid said thats not a race car, he then pointed to the Magna and said "That is a RACE CAR". My wife and I could'nt stop laughing for days over that one.

The shape of the TE-TJ is a classic. Is as good now, as it was when released in 1996/7?
Frameless doors is a big asset. The front end (from windscreen down to bar) looks similar to those Skylines.

lol i had that once back when my TR was riced up with the evo 6 spoiler and all. Next door neighbour got a brand new monaro, and whilst outside showing his son said something along the lines of "Do you like this car? Maybe you can own one one day" And the kid (probably about 5-6) said no i want that one and pointed to my car. I just smiled at his dad, felt so proud....should have been a warning that i was driving a childs car though :P.
Though to my advantage i had superman seat covers that the kid absolutely LOVED.
But as for the original topic, my brothers wife thinks that magna's are slow pieces of poo, haven't taken her out yet but my fiances sister got a nice little surprise. But hell i love the looks too, and being so cheap :D. When i was looking for a new car i was contemplating buying a VS statesman, which is roughly '97, but for LESS than what they were going for i picked up a TJII that has more features, just not as much room as the stato.

Skylines have always had similar lines to the magna, even dating back to the R31 days. It wouldn't be hard to make a magna look like a skyling (apart from rear lights) and vice versa. Though you'd be crazy to wanna do up a skyline to look like a magna :P.

It was hilarious, my mate has not taken it well, although he hides his true feelings around me, I found out the other day that he had taken my neighbors kid for a drive around our local area, so I will relay the coversation that we had:
Kid: He took me for a drive in his car, he told me I would wet my pants cause its so fast.
Me: So was it scary?
Kid: Nah, but he went to 140ks, and he said it would suck me into the seat.
Me: Did it suck you to the seat?
Kid: No, but yours does, yours would flog his car, and yours sounds alot nicer.
Me: Thanks little buddy, so mines better hey?
Kid: Yeah yours is a V8 hey?:bowrofl:
Me: No, urm, um, its a V6 though, and its got a manual transmission.
Kid: But how come its so fast, it really puts you into the seat?:D
At this point the kid became a friend for life, needless to say he comes over to my house alot lately to check out what I do to the car.
Yesterday he comes over when I was putting in ADR approved pedals, and the kid asks if I was putting in more power? with a look on his face saying it dont need more powah!!!

I believe it's a combination of both that and the fact that for what you get compared to $$ it's a sweet purchase for a 1st/2nd car. I know of at least 3-4 mates who are contemplating buying a magna as their next car because they have been in mine and couldn't get over how smooth it drove, with power and the couldn't believe the price i paid. Though 2 of them drive VP commodores and 1 a vn, the other an XF falcon, so it's probably not really a fare comparison :P.
lol and gotta mention that one of them did ask how come my cars back end didn't fling out when i took a u turn a little harder than i should have.

I know Skyna's front bar is an R34 one custom made to fit his Magna by Jetspeed.
But from what I've been told all you need is a few cm's added and they'll fit a magna with some modification to the mounting positions.

I think they've always had cred, it's just noone wanted to admit it. I think my favourite moment was when i was a furneral (sad day ofc) i was in a suit, and i was driving me and my mates (twas my mates family members funeral) and when we all got int he car to leave, his aunty or someone came up and said "wow, that's nice, is this the car you hired to take you around?" (you know someone ppl get limo's etc.) - anyway, jsut a small story there.
3 cheers for magnas! :P

Yeah theres defiantly more Magnas on the roads with mods.
About the Skyline statement, ive been told by people that i could put on the old Skyline lights on the rear, and a few other mods. But just seeing some of the cars you guys have is amazing.
Makes me proud to drive a Magna, even if it is an Astron :D

Being more accessable to a younger age group doesn't meant they have gained street cred. They are still a FWD family sedan. For what it does, it does very well but it won't ever gain street credibility. What it's gained is acceptance and that it's not as bad as the misconceptions it attracted due to poor early models.

with the FWD comment whats the civic which is like the biggest followed car ever and with it being a family car whats the 4 door R33 look like lol. nah i just think these are getting more cred due to the fact that they're not a commo or ford so not a bogan bus

Great response, I gotta agree with pretty much everything said.
@bain i'm 19 and i busted my balls to pay off my car lol know you werent havin a go but, and yeah there are spoilt kids out there.
I often get people asking me if it's my 'actual car'. Before I started modding people were more like 'it must be your dads coz a teenager wouldn't buy that', but now that it's looking a bit more schmick people are like, 'really, is that your car?'. Gives me a good feelin ha
I also love the way that at the moment they are fairly unique in terms of modding, I know about 5 people who own lancers and it makes me happy i opted for something unique that is also cheaper, faster and roomier. One of my mates recently bought a magna off my dad after i convinced him it was better than the ford and lancer he was selling, he fell in love with it after a week and now when he sees me doing work to my car it gets him all excited and wanting to follow suit. Just bought him clear indicators for his birthday lol.
As for the occasional 'what the hell are you spending money on a magna for?' people, I know 5 minutes in my passanger seat would educate them :D

Magnas are in my opinion the best value for money car you can buy in Australia, followed by the Commodore, and then the Falcon. There is just so much room, power, features, styling, and technology for such a cheap price.
People in other countries laugh that we pay $20,000 + for Skylines etc because for them Skylines, BMWs, Mercedes etc are what the average person buys and they can get them for so cheap. We pay a premium for their cars just because they are imports and are different. Similarly they would pay a premium for our cars because of the same reasons. You can get a VE Commodore in Australia now for around $36,000. You can bet that Europeans would be prepared to pay $45,000+ in Australian dollars for the same car.
I spoke to a guy from NZ recently who was saying he laughed when he came to Perth and saw Skylines that were only worth $6,000 - $8,000 in NZ being advertised for $20,000 in Perth. Australians don't really understand just how good value Australian built cars are.

Yep and considering that you'll be only 20 years old next year, then factor in insurance, maintenance, repairs, service costs, attraction to thieves, etc and all of a sudden it adds up. You would want to be made of money to buy one at your age assuming you don't want to be in debt for at least a few years.
One of my friend's used to own a Nissan EXA and only sold it just under a year ago. He reckons considering the car was only worth around $3,000, it was a rip-off. Everytime he took it in to get it serviced it cost him a minimum of $1,000 regardless of what was wrong with it. Everytime something went wrong with the car, he would always say "oh well there goes another $1k". Imports can be good cars, in fact very good cars. The problem with them is insurance costs , service costs, maintenance, repairs, and authenticity of the vehicles. Then you can also factor in that the vast majority of them have been thrashed something cronic. Buying a second hand XR6T which hasn't been thrashed is hard enough let alone an import.
In terms of what the car gives you in performance and quality there's absolutely nothing wrong with buying imports. Just make sure you understand fully the likelihood of you having to spend a lot of $$$ to buy one and moreso to maintain one.

That reminds me of a few months ago. There was a Show and Shine on here. We entered my old man's HSV Walkinshaw, I figured since I was going to be there all day I'd put my Magna in for ****s and giggles. A little fella aged 5 or 6 is walking past, he points at my Magna and says "I like that one more."
As humbled as I was... it's a bloody Walkinshaw, you're supposed to like it more than a Magna >_< Maybe I'm just biased.

i dunno bout street cred but there certianly more modded magnas around, when i got my first magna the only other modded magnas i would see were from AMC, now i often see magnas on rims with a dark tint
when we were at Motorvation (boganvation) we got alot of attention tho, mainly from older blokes who their wives had magnas and they were surprised at how well they went lol. Nah we still got some respect from alot of ppl attending motorvation and the general crowd but ur never gunna sway typical holden/ford oldschool V8 boys which is fair enuff coz ure never gunna sway me on little 4 cyl hatches
best call of the event tho
random bogan: "take ur mums car home"
gazza: "my mum has a commodore"
all in all, its nice to see mroe modded magnas, but we certainly dont have street cred and never will, its a FWD family sedan, if it was a RWD drive family sedan we would, if it was a FWD little sedan or hatch we would, if it was an import we would but we fall inbetween the categry's of typical cars to mod so we wont get street cred, so i just live with it and get on with modding the magna

It's good that people are doing up there Magnas. They look really hot when done up and are underrated. Good stuff people.
ok... i saw this coming... there is nothing wrong with FWD cars... If you wanna hang a skid... then hell yeah a RWD car is better... but for a "Street car" a magna can handle and go just as hard and any V6... if your were building a race car then youd go for RWD. I out handle Comondores and falcons every weekend on the street.
But there again... maybe that has somthing to do with bogan driving skills.

ahh... but now the truth is out, i was aslo wondering bout the BURN-OUT question, can it be done without help by water.....in an V6 AUTO? without the diff ****ting itself.
ive spun the wheeels B4 but it was a wet morning.
Magnatised
19-09-2006, 08:20 PM
It easy to do in any sort of water covered road. Just hit the gas, the car will hit 6500RPM and spin the front wheels a huge amount until it catches traction and takes off.
It is hard to do a brunout in FWD car. I can do it, but only a couple of times have I ever done it good! (This was in controlled environment by the way, my dad was getting me test out the car and its, (and my) limits, with pieces of **** tyres.)
Basically, I had no idea when I was first going to do it. But its theoretically easy to do, if you think about it.
Place gear in L mode (or just leave in first gear for manuals)
Have your foot on the brake pedal, not depressing it fully, but about half-three quaters of the way.
Slowly depress the accelerator, until a such point where you can feel the car is about to stall.
Take your foot off the brake, turn steering wheel fully, and pump the acclerator (not floor it, pump it) until you get the spin and can maintain it, you should feel the *** of the car coming out now.
And thats it. Its harder to do in real life. Also I wouldn't suggest doing it to often, bringing it to the stalling point like that can ruin the diff as M4DDOG pointed out, also ruin your brake pads, if not anyhting else engine wise.
P.S I do no condone the doing of burnouts on public roads, this is just an infformative guide for the curious.

or rip the hand brake hard and chuck it in reverse and floor it... not all fwd's will do this kinda wheelie though..... i did tons of skids in my hyundai getz and it had 18's on it.. easy... but... FWD butnouts are just like single legger rwd burnouts.... pointless.. just turns tyre into smoke.... more fun is driving with the handbrake locking the rear wheels.. or the "maccas trays"

agreed. What i do think looks tough, is loading up the revs perfectly, dumping the clutch, catching grip, and absolutely launching the car down the road/track. Thats what I love to watch at the drags, not the bloody burnouts. Smoking up the tyres whilst the car is stationary, I have never seen the point.

The engine can't react instantaneously to the sudden flooring of the pedal, and has to drop a gear to build its revs up quickly. Thats why it doesn't happen straight away.

Mitsubishi's rock. My previous car was a 94 Lancer, not exactly a powerhouse but I drove it hard for six years without even a hiccup. Recently picked up a 2000 Magna Sports for $9000 and my mates hate it when I laugh at them for paying $12000 for 97 Commodores that are already starting to fall apart and dont have any of the extras that come with the Magna.
As for burnouts, once had a VJ Charger with a ceramic button clutch, most of my buddies couldn't get it off the line without wasting forward speed as tyre smoke. Quick launches take more skill than breaking traction.
I only started geating street credit when i started chopping up VL VTs and **** then after that people like yeah magnas are alright i might buy one
Burnouts are just a waste of money my friend next daw goes through tyres every month and he wonders why hes broke

My Verada has good street cred around here, beats every single one of my friends cars including the following: TJ Sports Auto, BA XR6 Auto, 3.0 VL Manual, VY 3.8L Manual Ute, 3.8 VS Auto, 2.4 Nissan Silvia Auto, 4.0L EL Falcon Auto............just to name a few....

That's right. I think it's also funny when people rip it up thinking that they are warming up their street tyres to make them grippier :bowrofl:
Since most places wet down the area before the staging line to help start the burnouts, it would be wise to do a small ammount of wheel spin to dry off the water that you had to drive over. :P

haha you can't, well not at the drag strip i go to. The funniest part is when they make you line up the back wheels with the puddle, some people have no idea. Though last time they got it right and lined up the front wheels :). A little spin of the wheel shakes off the excess water :).

Possibly but then you have to drop it passed where they nominate you to rip it up and some of them get narky. Don't know why cause half the bogans light it up at the right point then go flying passed the christmas lights
Just drive around it.
Yeah, that's what I do. We can do that at Willowbank

I woulda been disgraced getting the thumbs up from a VL driver. I woulda gave him the thumbs down.
i didn't mind.
at least he was aware of the magna.
Im a 20 yr old full licenced, lowered magna driver :).
I think its great, compared to other cars in its class.

i'm a cheap bastard thats what brought me towards the magna, don't think it was coz of the street cred, everyone i know still associate nerds with magna's haha but they still love my car and says that for what i paid i got a bloody bargain, everyone who drives it loves it, my gf bought a daewoo cielo with 60,000km on the clock and loved my magna of 250,000 (one of my old ones) shes looking at buying a 2nd gen right now herself
very easy to drive, can look bloody awesome, still get crap for doing up my so called "parents car" but haha oh well this coming from bogans driving a beat up commadhore thats worth not even 1k in ipswich the hole of all places

i am 17 and had the option of a falcon, commo and magna and i chose the magna cause not as many people drive them. the commies, when they have the exhausts done they sound shyte, and the falcons are just so crappy lookin (ef-au the BAs are ok) so i chose the TR, as it had cruise and electric windows, whereas the others didnt.
i am gonna be joining you peeps in the third gen forums soon as i now have a sienna red TJ Advance (but series 1 so no tippy) but hey, id rather that than a bogan comie.
i like that saying, 'they should be called common*****s! cause every bogans thrashed one. :D

I believe and feel that we drive probably the most disliked car in Australia. Perhaps I notice the tailgaters and people that cut me off more often driving this car because of the stigma attached to them compared to my past Toyotas.
wee thread mining is fun!!
